Kobrich Puts Up World Best In The Women’s 1500 freestyle In Santiago

On the final day of the South American Games in Santiago Chilean Kristel Kobrich put up a world’s best winning the women’s 1500 freestyle in a championship record time of 16:15.89.

Last weekend Mireia Belmonte recorded a 16:22.79 in Marseille, which was the top ranked time in the world until Kobrich hit the pool this evening. Kobrich is well off her lifetime best and Chilean national record of 15:54.30 which she posted at the World Championships last summer.

17 year old Matheus Santana of Brazil also had an impressive showing in the men’s 100 freestyle winning the event in a championship record time of 49.13. His time ranks him eighth in the world.

At this point in his training the young Brazilian is not fully rested, which makes this race even more outstanding as he beat his lifetime best of 49.21, which he posted at the Senior/Open Brazilian Championships in December.

Venezuelan Albert Subirats, who finished third in the individual 100 freestyle posting a time of 49.72, had an exceptional swim as part of his country’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay, splitting a time of 48.27.

Once again there was a new championship record set in every event on the day.

Santana is at last showing his potential.. after a illness 2013 (He has diabetes, and had a crisis, which made him not to go Worlds and even on his 49.21 he was not 100% recovered.. now CBDA got a team made of a doctor and a nutrion expert to monitor him all the time

Santana wasnt doing doubles because of his crisis. He was training half what he should be doing. Now he is fully recovered, i think we will see a nice battle between him and Dressel in a near future.

Josh, Andreina scretched because she was feeling a pain on her shoulders.

It’s too bad Andreina scratched the last day of the meet. That would have been a good race between her and Kristel in the 1500.
