Kliment Kolesnikov of Russia had the swim of the evening at the European Junior Championships in Hódmezővásárhely, Hungary setting a new junior world record in the first event. Kolesnikov won the the men’s 100 backstroke in a time of 53.65 breaking the record of 53.67 set by Canadian Javier Acevedo at the Canadian Olympic Trials in April.

Acevedo broke the Apostolos Christou‘s record of 54.03, which he posted at the 2014 European Junior Championships. The Russian, who was born in 2000, has made some incredible improvements over the last year dropping his lifetime best by almost three and a half seconds. He came into this season with a lifetime best of 57.13.
Seeing Kolesnikov break the record was a surprise. He came into the competition with a lifetime best of 54.66, which he posted in April. In the prelims he put up a time of 55.19 and qualified for the finals in the fourth place position recording a 55.08 in the semi-finals.
While this time is th official, FINA-certified WJR (or wull be presuming he passesdrug test) thecREA WJR record of 53.38 — setv @ the 2K13 U.S. Natiinals in Indy– belongs to the gut who won ths year’s U.S. Olympic 00 back title and is double-defending NCAA D1 cchamp iun 100-200 backs plus U.S. Open/Amrican/NCAA record-holde in both.
He was 16 i@ the time he swam that 53.38 and the reason that time is NOT the WJR is because FINA did not recognize this category until April of 2K14.
Had they made records retroactive tie would be record ang w/a bunch of tins for the GOAT.

If the records were all-time, Ryan Murphy would absolutely hold the WJR.
Also, Bill Bell, what is up with your keyboard? Trying to read that comment was as hard as it is for anyone to break the women’s 200 fly World Record.
FINA needs to either hurry up and work through this backlog of JWR’s or drop the idea altogether (I don’t see the need for them tbh. WR’s are enough).

It would be nice to have A list of the fastest under 20 or something like that like in track and field, but the concept already got destroyed when they completely ignored young swimmers before 2014 🙁
