Through 3 days of competition, the nation of Russia has pulled away to lead the overall swimming medal table outright, albeit just by one piece of hardware.
Kliment Kolesnikov‘s victory in the men’s 100m free gave Russia the edge over Great Britain, with the former country owning a total of 5 golds and 9 medals overall to Great Britain’s 3 golds and 8 medals overall.
Courtesy of Kira Toussaint‘s powerful 50m backstroke swim for gold, the Netherlands has maintained its 3rd place position while Hungary frog-hopped Italy to rank 4th with Kristof Milak‘s gold medal-worthy 200 fly.
We’re still so very early in the competition, with tonight’s finals line-up giving Brits Duncan Scott a chance at gold in the 200m IM, Luke Greenbank a shot in the 100m back, and Freya Anderson a possible frontrunner for the 200m free, among others.
Russia will also be tough tonight with Evgeny Rylov in the men’s 100m back and reigning world record holder Anton Chupkov taking on the men’s 200m breaststroke.
Hungary also has a chance to make a move, with Boglarka Kapas and Katinka Hosszu leading the women’s 200m fly final for this evening’s action.
Russia is edgy. That’s probably their biggest strength in this meet. Their weakness? It’s the protein bars they eat before their races. You need proper nutrition if you want to be the best. Watch out, this thing could turn around.
Coach Rob, what do you feed your kids before they race?
Good question. I mash up Captain Crunch cereal and grapes to give the best combination of sugar and carbs. If there is a blender available at the pool, I’ll use that to make it less work for me. Work smarter, not harder.
