Kregor Zirk of Estonian broke his own national record on Tuesday night as he swam a 1:54.22 in the first semifinal of the men’s 200 butterfly. That broke his previous record of a 1:55.48 that he swam this past February at the 2024 World Championships for 5th.

Zirk was faster tonight on all four of his 50 splits. The biggest difference was on his first 50 as he was 0.61 seconds faster tonight.

Zirk already became the highest finisher from Estonia in the event as he previously held that title with a 21st place finish in the event in Tokyo. He has advanced to tomorrow night’s final as the 5th seed.

He also now is the highest finishing male for the country all-time as he previously held that title as he was 13th in the 200 free in Tokyo. He will look to become the country’s first mdalist tomorrow night.

Zirk trains under head coach Tom Rushton who also coaches Siobhan Haughey. Earlier this year, Zirk spoke of his training situation saying, “It’s much cheaper for me to fly to Hong Kong and train there than to do it in Tallinn.”

According to Estonian Swimming IG, Ivar Stukoklin took 3rd for them in the 4 fr back in 1980!

Milak is the GOAT. He is by far the best butterflyer ever. And also a cool and clever guy. It doesn’t matter what others are swimming, he has the most unique and beautiful swimming technique.
