The men’s 200m fly final took place in Budapest tonight, where American Luca Urlando was crowned World Junior Champion with his 1:55.02 field-topping performance. Silver went to Japan’s Tomoru Honda, who clocked 1:55.31, while Italy’s National Record holder Federico Burdisso was right behind for bronze in 1:55.39.
Finishing just over a second away from bronze was Taiwan’s Kuan-Hung Wang, the 17-year-old who threw down a huge PB of 1:56.48 to land in 4th.
Wang entered these World Junior Championships as the 4th-seeded swimmer, holding a lifetime best mark of 1:57.21. He dropped into 1:56 territory this morning with a 2nd seeded heat swim of 1:56.86 before lowering his newly-minted best time further to a new clocking of 1:56.48 in tonight’s final.
Splits for Wang’s time included 55.90/1:01.97 to give him a new National Record with his performance this evening. His outing overtakes the previous Taiwanese National Record of 1:56.54 set by Hsu Chi-Chieh 9 years ago.
