Kyle Chalmers Sets World Junior Record in 100 Free in Singapore

2016 FINA WORLD CUP – SINGAPORE

Australian 18-year old Kyle Chalmers already has an Olympic gold medal in his trophy cabinet in the long course 100 free, and while he couldn’t fight back the pure short-course front-end speed of Russian Vlad Morozov on Friday on day 1 of the 2016 FINA World Cup Series stop in Singapore, Chalmers did come away with the World Junior Record.

Swimming in short course meters (as compared to the Olympic long course), Chalmers touched in 46.61 – behind Morozov’s 45.92. Chalmers is 18, and because he’ll still be 18 at year’s end (he has a June birthday), he’s still eligible for World Junior Records. He’s actually the first World Junior Record holder, having cleared the 47.20 “world best time” benchmark set by FINA when they announced the addition of World Junior Records in short course meters.

Chalmers also holds the World Junior Record in long course thanks to the 47.58 that won him the gold medal this summer at the Olympic Games in Rio.

The 100 free was Chalmers’ only final on Friday – he was 9th in the 50 fly and so missed a second swim. He’s scheduled for a busier day 2, with entries in the 200 free, 100 fly, and 50 free.
