Kyle Leach Breaks CHSAA 4A State Record With 44.33 100 Free

Windsor snapped a 3 year win streak for Discovery Canyon after Discovery Canyon had its prelims 400 free relay disqualified. Discovery Canyon led by 8 points going into the final event, the 400 free relay, but unable to compete, they came out of it 8 points behind.

Kyle Leach (Cheyenne Mountain), a Mizzou recruit, broke the CHSAA 4A record in the 100 free, throwing down a 44.33. Leach was out fast, hitting the 50 mark at 21.30, then posting a 23.03 coming home. That time was almost half a second off Leach’s best time of 43.92, which he set at Winter Juniors this past December. Griffin Ayotte, an Air Academy junior, also nearly came in under the old record, posting a 44.70 (old record 44.64).

Pueblo County freshman John Plutt won the 100 fly, shedding over 2 seconds off his prelims time of 52.43 to post a 50.26. Plutt was out the fastest in the field, posting a 23.48 on the first 50, and was the fastest coming home, posting a 26.78 to be the only swimmer in the field to break 27 coming home.

Jack Moranetz (D’Evelyn) won the 100 breast after setting a new CHSAA 4A record in prelims (55.83), but was off his prelims time, posting a 56.39. Moranetz’s time was still good to win by nearly a full 1.5 seconds. Nicholas Shermann (Pine Creek) brought home a pair of individual wins, coming in the 200 IM and 100 back. In the 200 IM, Shermann built up an early lead which he continued to expand through the 150 mark. His splits of 23.65, 27.82, 31.97, and 27.37 brought him in at a final time of 1:50.81.

Brendan Byrnes (Discovery Canyon) took diving by nearly 50 points, racking up a final score of 508.75. The diving record is the oldest standing 4A state record, sitting at 559.46 from Ben Grado back in 2006.
