University of Toronto swimmer Kylie Masse broke her first long course Canadian national record tonight at the CIS Championships en route to a victory by over a second.
Masse clocked in at 27.84 in the 50m backstroke final to dip under Brooklynn Snodgrass’ previous national record of 27.97 that she set back in 2014 at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
In doing so, Masse took down Marie-Pier Couillard of Laval who clocked in way back in 28,93. Phoebe Lenderyou of Dalhousie finished third behind both Masse and Couillard in 29.17.
While the record is Masse’s first in the long course pool, she’s currently the national record holder in the short course 50m backstroke as well. Masse broke it two times this season in a back-and-forth exchange with teammate Paige Miller which ended in her setting the current record at the OUA Championships.

The swim ranks Masse sixth in the world this season, just ahead of Hungarian superstar Katinka Hosszu.
Masse is the favourite in all the backstroke events this weekend. She’ll also have another chance to better her newly set 50m backstroke Canadian record later on in the meet during the 4x50m medley relay.
Masse’s time makes her one of the favourites to make the Canadian national team in the backstroke events, which has plenty of depth from all across the country.
