Today is the date upon which all official 2024 Olympic bids must be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the American city of Los Angeles is marking the day with a short promotional video.
The visual presentation highlights both the coastal and city sites the locale holds, touting itself as the western capital of the U.S., the northern capital of Latin America and the eastern capital of the Pacific Rim. Words of “Welcome to the New L.A.” spread across the screen, as the theme of city reinvention is thread throughout shots of Californians, both young and old.
L.A. is the replacement bid for the failed attempt by Boston to capture the United States Olympic Committee’s support. Contrast L.A.’s video’s emotion with that of Boston’s initial promo video highlighting that city’s rich history, and the themes are somewhat symbolic of where the cities now find themselves in terms of potential hosts for the 2024 Olympic Games.
Of course it is still a long road ahead for Los Angeles, who will be competing against Hamburg, Paris, Rome, Budapest and possibly Toronto as host of the world’s biggest sporting event. The clock is certainly ticking for Toronto, or any other city wishing to make their intentions known. All official bids are due to the International Olympic Committee today, September 15, 2015. The IOC will vote on the host city during the 130th International Olympic Committee session in Lima, Peru in the summer of 2017.
My last trip to La was bad, the city seemed worn down. And the video said “working to make a new LA”, so are they saying the city isn’t good right now? Not to offend locals, but video was not giving the best vibe.
I am in favor of Budapest. I live in LA County so I understand the video…..but……Budapest (and Hungary) are mad for Olympic sports. Give it to a nation and city that is beautiful and extremely Olympic sports oriented.
