University of Bridgeport Men’s Swimming Coach Brad Flood announced today that Brian Kelly of Mahwah (NJ) High School and the Lakeland Hills YMCA Swimming Team has signed a National Letter of Intent to become a member of the Purple Knight Swimming 2018 class. As a Junior in high school, Kelly posted times in the 100-yard Backstroke (50.25), 200-yard Backstroke (1:51.77), 100-yard Butterfly (50.49) and 1650-yard Freestyle (15:58.90) that are under the 2014 NCAA Division II “B” Standard and would place him at 2nd (100 Back, 100 Butterfly & 1650 Free) or 3rd (1650 Free) on the current UB Men’s Swimming depth chart. Kelly swims for the Lakeland Hills YMCA Swimming Team and Head Coach Keira Cruz.
Kelly has achieved USA Swimming 2013 World Swimming Championships Trials and JR National Championship time standards, as well as placing in the Top 16 of the 2013 YMCA Short Course National Swimming Championships, in the 100 Backstroke. His efforts at the 2013 YMCA Short Course Nationals helped the Lakeland Hills YMCA to a 9th place combined Team finish.
Coach Flood says “Brian’s decision to sign a National Letter of Intent with the UB Purple Knights is a major move forward in our national recruiting effort. He will go a long way towards replacing the loss next year of graduating Senior Captain and NCAA 3-time defending 100-yard Backstroke Champion & Record holder, Oscar Pereiro. The backstroke leg of the medley relays has been a major advantage for us at NCAA’s, and with Brian’s talents coming in next season, we expect that loss to be substantially minimized.”
“The bonus with Brian is that his talents, with a whole senior season of swimming ahead of him, we are extremely excited about the potential Brian brings for our continued success in placing high in the NCAA Championship Team standings in the coming years. This is an excellent start to our 2014 recruiting efforts.”
Brian Kelly says:
“I felt that UB was a great fit for me, both academically and athletically. Their talented swimming team will challenge me and I feel will help me achieve my goals in the future. I am so proud to be the first member of the UB Purple Knights Swimming class of 2018.”
