This was Lander Valley’s first state title since 2011, lifted in part by freshman Olivia Fowler, who kicked off her high school career with a state title in her very first swim of the day – a 2:04.51 in the 200 free.
Depth was the name of the day for Lander – they won just 3 of the day’s 12 events, but with two finishers in the 6-swimmer A-final for every single individual swimming event of the day, they ran away with the team scoring tally.
The other individual victory for the champions came in the other long freestyle, where junior Maria Kulow swam 5:34.13 to win by 18 seconds.
Lander’s first relay win of the night came in the last event – the 400 free relay – where they swam a 3:48.40 to finish over a second-and-a-half ahead of Worland High.
In the team standings, after Lander Valley came Sublette County, Worland, and the 4th place Riverton High School team – who left a big impression on the meet even without the depth to contend for the team title.
Riverton won the other two relays on the day, doing so with 4 underclassmen to boot. First came the 200 medley relay, which swam a 1:56.11 for a narrow victory over Lander Valley; and later in the day came the 200 free relay, which swam 1:43.51, another tight race, this time beating Sublette County by two tenths.
Riverton also got wins in the 200 IM and 100 free both from junior Sonsoles Aguayo. She swam 2:11.61 in the former and 52.75 in the latter to go a perfect 4-for-4 in event titles.
Her teammate Kaylie Gopp won the 100 fly in 1:03.63, narrowly beating out Newcastle senior Rachel Henkle (1:03.95).

- Ellyse Russel, sophomore, Worland, 50 free – 24.78
