Le Clos, Van Der Burgh Earn Multiple Wins at 2015 Treviso Swim Cup

Italy’s ASD Natatorium played host to this year’s Treviso Swim Cup, where amateur and professional swimmers alike took to the pool Friday, June 26th and Saturday, June 27th across a competitive international field. South African men in particular cleaned up several events, as superstars Chad Le Clos and Cameron Van der Burgh raced their way to multiple race titles at the meet.

Meet Results

Chad Le Clos topped the men’s 50m freestyle field, a rather rare event for the 23-year old, clocking the winning time of 22.70  Le Clos represented the only swimmer to dip under the 23-second threshold in the race.  Le Clos would also go on to claim the top prize in the men’s 50m butterfly event, roaring to the wall in a time of 23.74, this time representing the only swimmer to score a sub-24 second showing.  Le Cos’ third and final event was his 100m butterfly, where he registered a time of 52.11 to win the race quite comfortably.  Le Clos has already been beneath 52 seconds this year with his 51.66 mark from the Monte Carlo stop of this year’s Mare Nostrum series.  That time still positions Le Clos as the 5th-fastest man in the world in the event thus far this year.

For his part, South African teammate Cameron Van der Burgh racked up wins in both the 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke races, while claiming a runner-up spot in the 200m breaststroke contest.  In the 50, Van der Burgh threw down a 27.53 to claim the win and also score the 15th-fastest time in the world this year.  Van der Burgh already owns the 2nd-fastest time of 2015 with his 27.01 from Italy’s Sette Colli Trophy. In the 100m breaststroke, “VDB” raced away with the meet title in a time of 1:01.15, a rather lackluster outing considering the man has been under a minute with his 59.78, the 5th-fastest time in the world from his swim at South Afrian Nationals.  Luca Pizzini took the men’s 200 breast race in a time of 2:13.21, with the South African finishing in 2:15.61 for 2nd place in the event.

Devon Myles Brown crushed a 1:48.45 in the 200m freestyle to win the event by almost two full seconds.  His time was the only one to dip beneath 1:50 on Saturday, although the rising freestyler already has a world’s top 20 time with the 1:47.44 he registered at South African Nationals.
