Today is the fifth and final day of competition at YMCA Nationals. This morning’s prelims session featured the heats of the 200 fly, 100 free, and 100 breast. The 1650 will also be contested today, with the early heats swimming after prelims and the fastest heat swimming with finals.
Blair Regional YMCA’s Leah Shackley opened the morning’s session with a huge best time in the 200 fly. Shackley, an Indiana commit, took over five seconds off her best time from January to clock a 1:55.75, leading this morning’s prelims by over two seconds.
Shackley’s performance moves her to 28th all-time in the girl’s 15-16 age group, and would have made her the fastest performer on Indiana’s roster this past season by over a second.
15-year-old Micah Davis of Saint Cloud Area Family YMCA grabbed the top spot in the boys’ 200 fly, coming in at 1:47.83. Davis was only a few tenths off his personal best, which he set at the Minnesota Senior State Championship last month. Oshkosh Community Y’s Sebastian Aguilar set a personal best time by nearly two seconds to qualify in 2nd with a 1:49.14.
The girl’s 100 freestyle should be an exciting race this evening, as the top three swimmers this morning qualified within 0.15 of each other. Piedmont Family Y’s Morgan Thomas took the top spot with a best time of 49.74, while Alexa Fulton took second (49.85) and Cadence Vincent qualified in third (49.85). The defending champion and meet record holder, Anna Moesch, scratched the event.
Just like in the 50 free yesterday, Brendan Whitfield and Roman Jones took the top two seeds in the 100 freestyle this morning. Whitfield stopped the clock first at 43.72, while Jones was less than a tenth behind at 43.80. Both have been faster this season, so it should be a faster race tonight.
Champaign County YMCA’s Angie Coe topped the field this morning in the 100 breaststroke. Coe, a Texas recruit, swam a 1:01.43, putting her just a few tenths off her personal best from 2021. Behind her was four swimmers at 1:02, led by Tennessee commit Tori Brostowitz (1:02.14).
Ethan Schwab of Birmingham Family YMCA decisively claimed the top seed in the boy’s 100 breaststroke this morning with a 54.45. Despite being nearly half a second off his own best time, the Michigan recruit cleared the rest of the field by over a second. Ian Fournier posted a personal best time of 55.46 to take 2nd, while Alexander Karahalis swam a best time of 55.86 for 3rd.
I believe the Live Results link for this meet is broken, at least on this page – the link that worked for me is below. (Pasting full text rather than hyperlink for clarity)
