Leah Shackley Swims 50.96 100 Fly; #3 15-16 All-Time (Y-Nats)

2023 YMCA NATIONALS (SC)

16-year-old Leah Shackley of Blair Regional Y swam a 50.96 to win the 100 fly tonight at Y-Nationals in Greensboro. That time puts her at #3 in the 15-16 age group of all-time. Shackley won the event by over a second and a half.

Shackley swam the 100 fly tonight after already swimming a 1:51.27 in the 200 back earlier in the session as she competed in two individual events on day 2 of the meet. She is also expected to compete in the 100 back and 200 fly later in the meet.

All-Time Performers, 100 Butterfly (SCY) – 15-16 Girls

  1. Claire Curzan, 49.51 – 2021
  2. Alex Shackell, 50.89 – 2023
  3. Leah Shackley, 50.96- 2023
  4. Beata Nelson, 51.08 – 2014
  5. Torri Huske, 51.29 – 2019

She had been previously ranked #13 all-time in the age group after swimming a 51.93 only two and a half weeks ago at the Pennsylvania AA High School State Championships. That swim also was a best time and set a Pennsylvania State Record as she secured the win.

Shackley has had a huge drop in the event over the last year as she swam a 53.98 at last year’s Pennsylvania AA State Championships at age 15.

Overall, she has had a huge progression in the event this year as she has previously mainly focused on backstroke. She competed in the 100 back at Wave I trials a few years ago as well as the 50, 100, and 200 back at International Team Trials in April 2022. At Y-Nats a year ago, she did not even swim the 100 fly, opting to swim the 50 free, 100 back, and 200 back instead.

Shackley is committed to Indiana for 2024. Notably, that time would have made the B-final and Indiana had no individual swimmers in the event at NCAAs.
