2013 US Winter National Championships – Women’s 1650 freestyle – as reported by SwimSwam / Braden Keith

For a swim this fast, the amount of ways the time can be chopped up to really shock people are almost endless, but here’s a good one: this 1650 free time would rank her 15th on the 15-16 boys’ all-time list, just behind former World Championship team swimmer Sean Ryan, and ahead of several former, current, and future All-American swimmers (Townley Haas, Drew Cosgarea, Zane Grothe, Olympian Andrew Gemmell, and Adam Hinshaw are among the names who weren’t this fast at 16).

A list of noteworthy records broken by Ledecky with this swim:

  • 15-16 NAG Record – 1650 free (Ledecky – 15:28.36)
  • 15-16 NAG Record – 1000 free (Ledecky – 9:22.35
  • American/U.S. Open Records – 1650 free (Katie Hoff – 15:24.35)
  • Winter Nationals Meet Record – 1650 free (Ledecky – 15:28.36)

  • 55.78

I know it’s still a bit of a stretch, but will we see Ledecky be the first woman to break 15:00? It seems crazy, but she’s just got to hold a pace of one second per hundred faster. Wow.

Katie is becoming a legend right in front of our eyes. It’s an honor to watch her swim.

Katie will go to college and experience the thrill of college swimming. She will swim fast. But more importantly she will get an excellent education and grow as a young woman.

Of course. And there’s no rule you’ve got to start college right after you graduate high school or if you do that you’ve got to take a full course load. Assuming you don’t want to be NCAA eligible, that is.

I never thought it was possible that another swimmer will replace Janet Evans as the greatest female distance swimmer of all time.

But if Ledecky repeats the 400-800-1500 wins in Kazan and win 400-800 golds in Rio, she will have done just that.

Same goes with Missy and Egerszegi.
Now we just need to uncover another sublime talent to overtake the Mme. Butterfly (I need not spell her name). Susie O’Neill and Liu Zige came short.

I hope she chooses her collegiate future very carefully, that is if she decides to go amateur, but if not (ie. goes professional), she should just study/go to college in her area, like Georgetown, John Hopkins, etc and still swims and trained by… Read more »
