Legacy Eagle Maly Shores Verbally Commits to Emory

Hickory High School (North Carolina) senior Maly Shores has made a verbal commitment to the Emory Eagles for 2017-18. “I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim at Emory University! Thank you to everyone who has helped along the way. I can’t wait to be a part of such a great team!” Shores is a second-generation member of the Emory women’s swimming and diving team; her mother, Rachael LeClair, swam for Emory in the class of 1990, and was a D3 national record-holder in the 400 IM.

Shores has been a NCHSAA finalist during all three of her high school seasons. Individually she placed seventh in both the 200 and 500 freestyles at the 2016 3A State Meet and fourth in the 200 free her sophomore year. She has also been a member of several Hickory freestyle relays over the past couple of seasons, all of which finished in the top 3.

Shores swims year-round for Hickory Foundation YMCA Seahorse Swim Team. She has qualified for YMCA Nationals every year since 2013, both individually and as a member of relays. Mostly a mid-distance freestyler, her top SCY times are:

  • 200 free – 1:55.14
  • 500 free – 5:06.88
  • 1000 free – 10:38.92
  • 200 IM – 2:13.88
  • 400 IM – 4:44.86

The Emory women’s team has nine national D3 titles to its name, including the last seven in a row. Maly would have made the Eagles’ top-10 lists in the 200 free, 500 free, and 1000 free during the 2015-16 season.
