Leon Marchand threw down a 4:07.80 400 IM to break the Pro Swim Series record… in April. Less than 3 weeks after what may have been the best NCAA performance in history. The sad part is… is felt a little ‘meh’.
Now, I KNOW this is an insane time, especially for in-season. It again indicates that Michael Phelps’ last individual world record is on borrowed time. However, this is the star effect. Once you’ve swum at such a high level, people start expecting fast swims all the time. I sank Leon swimming an “eye-popping” time this weekend and to me, this doesn’t quite make the cut.
IT WAS CLOSE. 4:06-high or even 4:07-low would have been in contention. But when you go 3:28 in the scy 400 IM, it sets the bar pretty dang high.
4:07 is probably equivalent to a 3:31 SCY
He just went the fasted non-tapered 400 IM in history. That’s pretty eye popping.
I think this is the right perspective to have.
He’s either gonna break or going really close to the world record this summer.
I suspect Marchand wanted to go 4:06 or even 4:05, but I actually think that was a very solid swim for him and Foster.
Last year at this meet he went 4:10.38 and then went 6.10 seconds faster (4:04.28) at worlds a few months later. If Marchand dropped the same 6.10 seconds in Fukuoka, that would put him at 4:01.70, which I think we can all agree would be a huge swim.
Before Phelps went 4:03.84 in Beijing, he was 10.24 seconds slower in February (4:14.08).
I think the LCM 400 IM is particularly hard to swim near your best unrested. Marchand’s 3:31 in January shows he can swim a 400 IM fast unrested, but it may be harder to do… Read more »
But it seems to me that Phelps swam a huge 4.05:25 WR in June 2008 during US trials in Omaha.
You are correct, however I was assuming that Phelps got some rest for trials.
3:28 is impressive but yards doesn’t mean shit lol
watch him flinch at the start, should’ve DQed lol
such an evident flinch and ppl have been DQed for way less
Not impressive
Would have won the 2021 Fraudlympics 400IM by a landslide
Fraud?
come on, it’s mid-season now, and good results usually come out at the end of the season. Marchand is great, but he is human not god,do not expect too much。
Didn’t he DQ at the start?
18 meters underwater at the start and it wasn’t called by anyone.
I don’t think under water footage is sufficient in this case, and unfortunately it only shows that breakout under water: https://www.youtube.com/live/mZod2pGFWYQ?feature=share&t=5342
Idk seems pretty eye popping to me
Agreed. As Mr Piano mentioned, that is surely the fastest non-tapered 400 IM in history.
Didn’t break MP’s world record in season? Kinda mid
Nobody’s ever tapered.
