Leon Marchand of France swam to another Olympic Record tonight posting a 2:05.85 in the 200 breaststroke. That broke the previous record of a 2:06.38 that Zac Stubblety-Cook of Australia swam to win the event in Tokyo three years ago.
Marchand also broke his own French national record tonight as his previous record stood at a 2:06.59 that he swam in June 2023.
Split Comparison
Marchand 2024 | Old Olympic Record (Stubblety-Cook, 2020) |
Marchand’s Old French Record
|
|
50 | 28.42 | 29.35 | 28.89 |
100 | 32.17 | 32.37 | 32.13 |
150 | 32.53 | 32.45 | 32.68 |
200 | 32.73 | 32.21 | 32.89 |
2:05.85 | 2:06.38 | 2:06.59 |
Marchand went out faster than Stubblety-Cook’s record as he was almost a full second faster on the first 50. Stubblety-Cook is known for a strong last 50 as Marchand was about half a second slower here than Stubblety-Cook was, but he was already far enough under the record that it did not matter.
With this Olympic Record, Marchand now holds three Olympic Records, the 400 IM, 200 fly, and 200 breast. He notably swam the 200 fly record at the beginning of tonight’s session, just under two hours before the 200 breast.
Marchand incredible performance in front of crazy good home crowd support.
ZSC backing up Tokyo hold with Silver and the only competitor within cooeeeee of Marchand – so humble so good!
News just reported ZSC caught covid 6 days ago. Zac did not mention this on any media interviews post race – class act!
Did he just put Marchand at risk of catching Covid? Or I assume he was deemed no longer infectious if he caught it a week ago?
Leon fell into his opponents lane half a sec after last swimmer finished.
I was actually worried when I saw him do that
ZSC pulled back only .03 on the second 100. Marchand has too much pace for him to open, and then comes home as fast as ZSC
He split a 1:00.5
Does he win the 100 breast here? I mean…
(Obviously that’s probably a wilder double than what he did tonight given the 4 IM, but pretend they weren’t.)
Remember all the doubters saying he would be too loaded and tired? Idiots
Not really?
Most of that was before the schedule was rearranged especially for him.
STOP. YOUR. WHINING.
People were still saying he wouldn’t swim them both up until like, last week.
When was the last time someone won the 200 fly and 200 breast at an Olympic meet?
never
He is now the second fastest ever in this event, and it’s also the second fastest performance ever in the event.
Leon just put on an absolute clinic here and made history wouldn’t be shocked if he now wins the 2 IM. Not sure what Shun will look like here but regardless you don’t back down and always assume everyone is at their best even when it may not look like it.
