Lexi Duchsherer, Who Swam Jr. Nationals with a Broken Leg, Commits to Arizona

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Lexi Duchsherer from Bismarck, North Dakota has verbally committed to the University of Arizona.

I chose  University Arizona  because the first time I walked on campus I fell in love with the team, coaches and the facility. The family atmosphere they talked about really came through and when they say that they are one big family they really mean it! I can’t wait to see where this adventure will take me with this amazing team. I would love to thank my family, coaches and teammates for always believing in me and pushing me to be my best every day! Bear Down

Duchsherer is a junior at Century High School, which is the state’s dominant high school swim program: the girls’ team has won the last 5 North Dakota High School State Championships.

Duchsherer is a big part of the school’s recent success: she is the 3-time defending state champion in the 50 free and the 2-time defending state champion in the 100 free. She holds the North Dakota State Record in the 50 free, though her 100 free is behind the record held by one of the greatest high school swimmers in the country’s history, and the best to come out of North Dakota, Dagny Knutson.

Best Times in Yards:

  • 50 free – 22.91
  • 100 free – 50.11
  • 200 free – 1:52.85
  • 100 back – 57.57
  • 100 fly – 56.87

As a sprinter, Duchsherer is not as tall as most – she stands 5-foot-7. But in an interview with the Bismarck Tribune earlier this season, she expressed that she doesn’t believe that her height matters: “it’s in the heart.”

Duchsherer also defended both of her sprint state titles, including a lifetime best in the 50 free, in November after breaking 3 bones in her leg in August (femur, tibia, and fibula). The injury came while chasing a football on a muddy field and stepping in a hole.

Two days later, she flew to the Junior National Championships in Palo Alto, and swam long course lifetime bests in the 50 and 100 frees, with the broken bones, before returning home to learn about the injury.

Arizona’s sprint group was a little short-handed last season. Duchsherer’s best time in the 50 would’ve ranked her 4th among the Wildcats, with 2 of the 3 swimmers ahead of her due to exhaust their eligibility before her arrival. Arizona’s top 100 freestyler, Kayla Filipek, ranked 20th in the Pac-12 last season. The team’s 200 free relay was 4th at the Pac-12 Championships, while their 400 free relay was 8th.

Duchsherer trains club with AquaStorm.

Awesome, but I’m just curious how? That’s crazy to unknowingly break 3 bones (and not little ones) and still swim!
Either way, nice work, will be fun to see what she accomplishes at AZ. Congrats!!!
