Day 2 – Prelims

This morning’s prelims in Nanjing were highlighted by strong performances from two young Chinese athletes.

15 year old Li Zauhao was the top qualifier in the boys 100 butterfly by more than half a second. Li posted a time of 52.97, which is just off his season’s best of 52.79. He will have two more shots at the junior world record which is held by Daniel Bell of New Zealand, who posted a 52.52 in 2008. Heading into the semi-finals his next closest competitor will be Aleksandr Sadovnikov of Russia.

Last night anchoring China’s mixed 4 x 100 freestyle relay Shen Duo put up a fantastic split of 53.43, she returned to the pool this morning qualifying first in the girls 100 freestyle posting a time of 54.65. Shen holds the junior world record of 54.15 which she posted at the Chinese National Championships earlier this year.

Her teammate Qiu Yuhan recorded the second fastest time of the morning finishing in a 54.65. She entered the competition with a lifetime best of 55.61 which she improved by almost a second. There are three other girls in the field; Siobhan Bernadette Haughey (54.47), Ami Matsuo (54.78) and Ruta Meilutyte (54.94), who have swum under the 55 second mark.

Hungarians Ben Gratz and Norbert Szabo have set themselves up well for the potential of finishing one two in the boys 200 IM, that is of course if they can displace Patrick Mulcare of the United States. Gratz was the top qualifier with a time of 2:02.06 followed by Mulcare who posted a 2:02.66 and Szabo who finished in a time of 2:02.95.

Hungary will also have a chance at two medal winners in the girls 200 butterfly. Lilana Szilagyi, who has a season’s best of 2:08.37 which ranks 16th in the world, was the top qualifier with a time of 2:09.44. Her teammate Dalma Sebestyen qualified with the fourth fastest time posting a 2:12.14.

Zang Yufei of China qualified second with a time of 2:11.62 while Park Jinyoung of Korea qualified third in a time of 2:11.88.

Nicolangelo di Fabio of Italy came into Nanjing with the fastest entry time in the men’s 200 freestyle having posted a 1:48.49 in Dubai last year and has a season’s best of 1:48.80. di Fabio came away as the fastest qualifier in the prelims posting a 1:50.08. The top five boys were separated by only 71 one-hundredths of a second.

Great Britain was the fastest qualifier in the girls 4 x 100 medley relay posting a time of 4:09.83. They were followed by China who recorded a 4:10.15 and Australia who finished in a time of 4:11.22.
