We sat down with Liam Custer, our #3 ranked recruit in the boys’ high school class of 2022. Custer made big news last week when he announced his verbal commitment to Stanford in conjunction with our #2 recruit, Josh Zuchowski. Custer explains what went into that decision and why he and Josh wanted to commit at the same time.
Custer also goes into detail about training during the COVID pandemic and the improvements he’s made in the last year, which are substantial ones on paper.

Congratulations!! I can’t imagine a better school to attend for academics, connections and swimming. I hope you love it as much as the kids that currently swim for Stanford. A true dream come true for the few are able to reach that level.

As a society, and especially in the swimming community, we need to do better. Negativity, Jealousy, or Hate will never win.
It is ok to have fun rivalry, but it is NOT ok to trash others , especially kids with dreams, or people who think differently.

Good luck at the graveyard-ow farm. Most Stanford guys go faster in high school
Go take a look at some of the time drops this year. Up and down the roster nearly every guy went a best time or went faster than they have ever gone at Stanford. Nearly every single guy beat their seed time in at least one event at Olympic Trials. All while putting up a very high team GPA. New coaching staff has changed the trajectory of the program. Stay hating but Stanford is a program on the rise and top recruits realize that. I don’t think there is any other website where people would hate on a 17 year old for choosing to go to Stanford…
Wow, someone is threatened, and citing something that happened for a few years with the previous coaching staff. From what I can find out, that is specifically opposite of the swimmers who have come in with the new coaching staff.
I’ve spoken w/ the new head coach, Dan, once and he seems to actually be really smart and up on the latest research in physiology and training, and appears to be continually educating himself (which is why I spoke to him). I’d say that is exactly what you’d want as an incoming freshman.
It would be impossible for me to choose another school if I was accepted into Stanford even if that meant I never swam any faster. Call it foolish, or the fact I’m old and understand the importance of having a wonderfully fulfilling job, but higher education is about higher education.
Good luck to every swimmer going to swim in college regardless of where you choose to go. You must have unwavering dedication to your sport and you make us swim alum proud.
