BOSTON, Mass. – Liam Pitt had a hand in four of Bucknell’s nine event wins, and it was his victory in the 100-yard butterfly that ignited a strong team finish that led to a 149-139 over Boston University on Saturday afternoon. The Bison improved to 2-0 on the season after sweeping Holy Cross and Boston University on the road this weekend.

Pitt, a sophomore from West Chester, Pa., enjoyed a huge day with wins in the 50 and 100 freestyles and the 100 fly, and he also swam the fly leg on the victorious 200 medley relay.

Freshman Leo Kuyl also had a terrific meet, as he swam on both winning relays, finished second in the 50 free as part of a 1-2 sweep with Pitt, and third in the 100 free as part of a 1-2-3 Bison sweep with Pitt and fellow freshman Matt Mills.

Jack Rose was Bucknell’s first individual event winner of the day in the 100 backstroke (51.79). The Terriers then went 1-2-3 in the 100 breaststroke and 1-2 in the 200 fly before Pitt (20.86) and Kuyl (21.09) got the Bison back on the right track in the 50 free.

Will Cadwallader and Nick Pirone took the top two places in both diving events to take all of the points on the boards, and then Pitt touched first in 46.30 in the 100 free, with Mills (46.76) and Kuyl (46.94) right behind. After a runner-up finish from freshman Garrett Kiesel in the 200 back, the Terriers picked up big points in the 200 breast and 500 free.

The Bison clinched the dual with wins in the final three events, starting with Pitt’s triumph in the 100 fly (50.13). Matt McGoey (1:54.37) and Sean Quinn (1:55.57) claimed the top two places in the 200 individual medley, and then Bucknell capped the meet with a convincing win by almost two seconds in the 400 free relay. Kuyl led off the relay, followed by Rose, Mills and McGoey.

The Bison snapped a four-meet series losing streak to the Terriers and reversed a 182-114 loss last season at Kinney Natatorium.

Abby Merriman swept the distance freestyle events, accounting for two of Bucknell’s eight victories on the day, as the Bucknell women’s swimming and diving team topped Boston University 166-34 on Saturday afternoon in the Terriers’ Competition Pool. The Bison picked up two dual wins in less than 24 hours after beating Holy Cross on Friday night.

After the Bison opened the meet with a narrow win in the 200-yard medley relay, Merriman dominated the 1,000 free in the first individual event of the day. She swam 10:30.82, good for an eight-second win over Boston University’s Joanna McNulty. Merriman came back later and won the 500 free in one of the most dramatic races of the day. She out-touched the Terriers’ Sydney Lee by six one-hundredths of a second.

The Bison posted 1-2 finishes in three events: the 100 backstroke and both butterfly races.

In the 100 back, Meghan Taner picked up the win in a time of 58.24, with Emma Hadley just behind in 58.64. Taner and Hadley were the only two swimmers in the race to finish in under one minute.

Two young Bison dominated the butterflies. In the 200 fly, sophomore Alexis Faria won in 2:05.46, one second in front of freshman Sabrina Vumbacco. The positions were reversed in the 100 fly, with Vumbacco winning in 57.29 and Faria second in 57.32.

Also winning for the Bison were Maddie Hartigan in the 100 free (52.63) and Hadley in the 200 back (2:06.58). Hadley also led off the winning 200 medley relay, with Catherine Craig, Faria and Alexandra Ritorto following for a time of 1:46.83.

Bucknell’s depth was a big factor, as the Bison posted 2-3 finishes in five of the events that Boston University won. Freshman Sophia Donati had a big points day with a second-place finish and two thirds. Craig was runner-up in both breaststroke events, and Vumbacco added a third-place finish in the 200 IM, giving her a first, a second and a third on the day.
