Liberty opened its 2021-22 swimming & diving season with a 142-115 win at Campbell, Saturday at Johnson Aquatic Center.
Liberty opens its season at 1-0, while the Camels fall to 0-2. This was the 20th meeting in the all-time series between Liberty and Campbell, with the Lady Flames winning the last 18 head-to-head dual meets in a row against the Camels.

Notable
• Liberty won one relay and nine individual events, while scoring the 200 IM and 400 free relay as exhibitions. Campbell won the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, while also claiming the meet-ending 200 freestyle relay.
• The Lady Flames received individual-event victories from nine different swimmers. Of those nine, five (freshmen Mary-Ashlynne Gordon, Grace Isaacs and Sydney Stricklin and sophomore transfers Abbie Shaw and Genna Joyce) were competing in their first meet as Lady Flames.
• Gardner earned her second career event victory, with the first coming in the 100 breaststroke at Campbell Oct. 24, 2020. Her time today (1:06.06) was 0.82 faster than last October.
• Hazel (500 free) and Suggs (200 back) won the same event, respectively, that they won during last year’s season opener at UNC Asheville.
• Only two individual events were decided by less than one second. Campbell went 1-2 in 100 freestyle, with Colleen Renshaw winning in 52.68 and Annie Sanchez (52.99) in second. Liberty’s Sydney Stricklin defeated Campbell’s Julia Sherlock by 0.66 seconds in the 100 butterfly (57.50 to 58.16).
• Liberty posted the only 1-2-3 finish of the day, with Genna Joyce, Jamyson Robb and Abbi Leisure taking the top three spots.
Historically Speaking
• Abbie Shaw now ranks fifth all-time in program history in the 50 backstroke (26.60) with her leadoff leg of the 200 medley relay.
• This was the seventh time in program history that Lady Flames have opened a season with a win at Campbell. Liberty is 7-1 in season openers against Campbell, as the Camels defeated the Lady Flames on Oct. 2, 2010 in Lynchburg, the first meet in Liberty swimming & diving history.
• The Lady Flames continued their success in conference dual meets, winning their 25th CCSA dual meet in a row. The last time Liberty lost a conference dual meet was Jan. 7, 2017 at FGCU.
• The Lady Flames are now 39-4 all-time in dual meets contested in North Carolina. Liberty has won 38 straight dual meets inside the Tar Heel State.
• Liberty is 18-2 all-time against Campbell in swimming & diving, with the Lady Flames winning each of the last 18 meetings. Campbell is Liberty’s most-frequent opponent in program history.

Liberty will have a two-week break from competition before heading to Huntington, W.Va. for a meet at Marshall, Oct. 21-22.

BUIES CREEK – Campbell dropped its second dual meet of the year to Liberty 164.5-97.5 at the Johnson Aquatic Center Saturday. Campbell took the top spot in four events on the day, all freestyle events.
Campbell got off to a solid start with the A-team in the 200 Medley grabbing second in 1:48.72, and Kourtney Cook (11:13.84) and Ema Balcuite (11:12.19) taking second and third, respectively, in the 1000 free.
Annie Sanchez followed with the first individual win of the day for the Camels in the 200 free with a time of 1:54.70
Colleen Renshaw helped continue the freestyle success in the 50 with first-place time of 24.02, more than a full second ahead of second place.
At the intermission, the Flames led the Camels 82-49.
Renshaw came out of the intermission with another first-place finish, taking the 100 free in 52.68. Sanchez finished tied for second at 52.99.
The final first-place finish of the day came in the 200 free relay as the A-team grabbed the top spot with a time of 1:36.56.
Campbell returns to the Johnson Aquatic Center three more times this month, with the next in less than a week. The Camels will host ECU Friday night at 5 p.m.
