OMAHA, Neb. – Day one of the Omaha Diving Invite is in the books with Holly Bernardin leading the way with first for the Mavericks in the 1M championship. Bernardin scored 244.70 to claim first.
“I’m proud of how Holly performed,” said diving coach Eric Sprague. “She had a couple of rough dives early but showed she can recover with three brilliant dives to close the competition and take the win.”
Isabella Price and Kady Eller joined Bernardin in the women’s top-10. Price posted a score of 208.40, while Eller finished with a score of 204.70.
In the men’s 3M championship, Ian Blackstock led the Mavericks. He claimed third place with a score of 246.10.
The Mavericks also took fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth in the event. Cort Chiodo, Cody Kranz, David Goodwin, and Wes Thompson took home the honors, respectively.
“This was a great start to the weekend for the divers. We’re getting some good competition heading into the conference championship meed that I expect will help with our confidence.”
The Omaha diving squads conclude the invite tomorrow at H&K Pool with the women’s 3M and men’s 1M.
“I’m excited to watch Kady dive in one more final at her home pool tomorrow. It’s been an honor to coach her these last four seasons.”
OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha Diving Invite was capped with stellar performances from Ian Blackstock and Kady Eller. Blackstock won the men’s 1M championship, while Eller posted a personal best score in the women’s 3M championship.
Blackstock scored 288.15 for first-place. He was one of five Mavericks in the top-eight.
“I watched Ian dive with some great purpose today,” said diving coach Eric Sprague. “I know he was a little disappointed with his performance yesterday, and he showed some real ability to put that behind him and put some great dives in today. He was only 12 points away from a zone qualifying score today, and he’s been that close a few time recently. It’s going to be well-earned when Ian reaches that goal”
Eller earned second with her career-best score of 262.75. She was the lone Maverick in the top-five, but two teammates joined her in the top-10.
“Kady had a fairy tale ending to her competitions in Omaha today as she finished in second place with her best score ever on 3M. I’m so happy to see her perform like that, and I know she’s going to be ready for conference in a couple of weeks. I look forward to watching Kady do her thing one more time.”
The Mavericks have a couple weeks break from competition before they head to the Summit League Championships. Omaha will compete for a team title Feb. 22-25 in Minneapolis.
“This was a great format for diving individual events on separate days and give us a conference feel. “This was a good weekend for us to identify where we need to focus for the final push into the Summit Championship. With the swimmers up at the Coyote Invite getting their tune-up in before conference, we should be firing on all cylinders when we get to Minneapolis in a couple of weeks.”
