Crean Lutheran Junior, Lindsey Engel clocked a winning time of 22.56 in the prelims of the 50 yard freestyle, securing the top seed by nearly 2 seconds and taking one of the most legendary swimming names off the top of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section D3 record list. Dara Torres’ 22.69 was set in 1985. Engel also broke the CIF SS D3 record in the 100 free with a :49.06, earning the top spot going into tomorrow’s finals.
She will head into tomorrow with for top seeds in the finals. On top of the 50 and 100 free, she lead off Crean Lutheran’s top seeded 200 medley with a :24.98, and anchored the top seeded 400 free relay in :48.95. Engel looks like she’s in a pretty good position to win 4 CIF SS D3 titles and maybe lower her records in both the 50 and 100 freestyle. Did I mention that she’s only a Junior?

Joe Swim – Weitzeil broke the Division 1 Record. Engel’s was the Division 3 Record.
It’s pretty sad that CA does not have any sort of multi-divisional state championship. It would undoubtedly be the fastest meet at that level in the country.
Torres may be gone from the CIF record list, but an even more impressive achievement is her 13-14 NAG record, which she set in 1982 (and which still stands): 22.44 in the 50 yard free.

I didn’t write this one, but sure I’ll send out a memo to everyone! All high school meets will be in yards unless clearly denoted, but we’ll try and make sure the word “yards” or “meters” appears somewhere in the first few sentences just in case.

i always assume 50 free in 22.56 for women is in SCY.
Otherwise, that would have been WR by miles.

The CIF Southern Section is comprised of approx 330 high schools and is larger than most other state championships on it’s own. The overall top several times in each event are also mostly faster than nearly all other state championships. Therefore, many people and many collegiate program bio’s will say something like, “won a CIF State title in…”.

It depends usually ,division 3 and 4 are not as fast.. Division 4 times are simliar to times of the 1970’s since a lot of the schools are the poorer schools in La or Orange not just smaller schools and the kids don’t swim year as much. or have competitive water polo times that do polo year round either.
Agree cynthia, 3 and 4 aren’t usually, but Crean Lutheran has put together a group of girls that is incredible between Engel and the Eastin sisters.
