Linnea Mack Collects 3 Wins as Club Swimmers Drop Big at Hawaii SCY Senior Champs

Before Thanksgiving, Hawaii’s Short Course Senior Championships took place. There were plenty of exciting swims, as a number of club swimmers qualified for winter juniors and Futures meets.

The biggest name in attendance was Linnea Mack, who’s currently training with the Aloha Aquatica pro group. The 26-year-old went 3-for-3 in her events, winning the 50 free (21.85), 100 free (47.89), and 100 fly (52.07). 52.07 in the 100 fly is a new lifetime best for her, cutting .69 seconds off her previous mark of 52.76, which had stood since 2019. That swim, done at a California club meet, was actually the last time that Mack raced the event before this meet.

Her sprint freestyle times were near her lifetime bests of 21.67 and 47.77, both of which she swam at 2017 PAC-12s.

Mack’s Aloha Aquatica teammate Jamie Ingram completed the same hat trick. Ingram is a graduate of the University of Manchester, and won a silver medal with England at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the 4×100 free relay. As a Brit, the 24-year-old is relatively new to yards swimming and his 19.87 50 free, 42.81 100 free, and 45.52 100 fly were all lifetime bests.

There was plenty of exciting swims for club swimmers at the meet too. Just named the 2022 AIA High School Division II Women’s Swimmer of the Year, Gabbie Primiano collected four individual event wins (100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM, 400 IM). The highlight of those wins was the 200 breast, where the Life Time Arizona swimmer clocked 2:16.42, earning her a winter juniors cut. The swim was a best time for her, shaving .22 seconds off her previous mark to achieve her cut time.

Kamehameha Swim Club’s Sage Miller earned her first winter juniors cut, dominating the girls’ 200 fly. The 15-year-old swam 2:01.48, winning the event by over 5 seconds. The swim was a lifetime best for Miller as she cracked 2:02 for the first time and dipped under the winter juniors cut by .31 seconds.

On the boys’ side, Iolani Swim Club teammates Briscoe Beaton and Evan Wong were an impressive mid-distance free duo. The pair went 1-2 the 200 free, dropping big time. They were the only two under 1:40 with Beaton touching first in 1:38.02 with Wong second in 1:39.77. For both of them, it was their first time under the 1:40 barrier, and Beaton made his winter juniors cut. Beaton is headed to Arizona next fall, and that time would put him second on the Wildcats’ roster this season.

The pair weren’t done though, as they posted lifetime bests in the 500 free, again in lifetime bests. Beaton won the event, but was much faster in the morning, dropping four seconds to hit 4:26.08–another winter juniors cut. No one on Arizona’s roster has cracked 4:30 yet this season. Wong scratched finals, but in prelims, he swam 4:36.29, the second fastest time.

Over the course of the meet, both boys swam lifetime bests in the 50/100/200/500 freestyle, and split 45.5s on Iolani’s winning 400 freestyle relay. Iolani swept the five boys’ relays, with Wong contributing on all the relays and Beaton on four.
