UCLA’s Linnea Mack posted the nation’s 7th-fastest time this season in the 100 back, sprinting to a time of 52.25. That’s well under the NCAA ‘B’ cut, and it’s eight tenths from the ‘A’ cut. Mack was also instrumental in UCLA’s victorious 200 medley relay, leading off with a field-best 24.62.
UCSB freshman Heaven Quintana tallied the most wins of the session, though, earning two individually in the 100 fly and 100 breast. She first eked out a win in a very tight fly crowd, her 53.70 leading four other women who went under 54 seconds. The 100 breast was a much easier win for her, as her 1:01.11 was over a second ahead of the rest of the competition. Quintana also had the quickest breaststroke split in the medley relay field with a 27.76.
The UCSB men had another strong showing on day two, kicking off the session with a win in the 200 medley relay. They got field-best splits out of Billy Mullis on backstroke (22.09), Jonathan Panchak on breaststroke (24.70), and Mason Tittle on freestyle (19.74). Mullis went on to win the 100 fly (47.57), while Panchak took 2nd in the 100 breast (54.95). Panchak’s teammate Andy Castilleja (54.38) got the win there. UCSB also collected a win in the 800 free relay with a 6:32.56, buoyed by Mullis’ lead off leg of 1:37.50.
Hawai’i’s Franziska Weidner, day one’s 200 IM winner, posted a 1:46.71 to take the 200 free, while her teammate Metin Aydin posted a big win in the men’s 100 fly with a 47.57. SDSU freshman Mckenna Meyer held off her teammate Frida Berggren in a great 400 IM race, with Meyer going 4:13.28 to Berggren’s 4:13.84.
