LIVEBARN Race of the Week: Maximus Williamson Surpasses Michael Phelps with 3:39 400 IM

Last week at the 2022 Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Austin, Texas, Maximus Williamson became the fastest 16-year-old in the history of the 400-yard IM with a winning time of 3:39.83.

Williamson broke the boys’ 15-16 National Age Group (NAG) record of 3:42.08 set by Michael Phelps in 2002, erasing the last yards NAG record on the books belonging to the 28-time Olympic medalist. Williamson went more than two seconds faster than his previous-best 3:42.22 from last year’s Winter Juniors.

ALL-TIME RANKINGS 15-16 AGE GROUP

  1. Maximus Williamson, 3:39.83 – 2022
  2. Michael Phelps, 3:42.08 – 2002
  3. Matt Fallon, 3:44.08 – 2019
  4. Carson Foster, 3:44.16 – 2017
  5. Sean Grieshop, 3:44.45 – 2015

This is your LIVEBARN Race of the Week because only two swimmers have ever been under 3:44 at the age of 16: Williamson and Phelps. Now, Williamson is more than two seconds faster than the G.O.A.T.

Phelps’ NAG record survived 20 years through the super-suit era, but it couldn’t run from Williamson. But don’t worry, Phelps fans, his name won’t vanish from the record books anytime soon as he still owns several LCM records in the 13-14, 15-16, and 17-18 age groups.

Williamson’s Lakeside Aquatic Club teammate, Cooper Lucas, pushed him early in the race en route to a runner-up finish in 3:42.09, moving the Texas commit up to No. 10 all-time in the 17-18 NAG.
