A California swimming club coach has passed away in a rowing accident that happened on Monday, March 5th. John Hooten, coach at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club Barracuda Swim Team, died while rowing on Lake Natoma outside Sacramento, when he reportedly fell into the water and failed to surface for around 10 to 15 minutes.
Hooten’s body was recovered on Tuesday, March 6th, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office. He was 66 years of age.
Below is the message posted on the Barracudas’ website, marking how the coach will be missed by families and friends of the swim club.
“We are deeply saddened to inform you of the passing of Coach John Hooten, who tragically lost his life in a rowing accident yesterday on Lake Natoma. Through his continual involvement in both swim and Scouting, John made an indelible mark on the lives of hundreds of children and families over the years in our community. He was a truly incredible, talented and giving man and we are grateful and fortunate to have known and learned so many valuable lessons from him during that time.
While we are all dealing with our own and our children’s shock and grief, we would ask you to please keep Sue and rest of the Hooten family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you to so many of those who have taken the time to show such support and love already.”
He was a great man who touched the lives of thousands of kids. RIP
