But you aren’t Phelps…you haven’t won 14 Golds and won’t win any at this Olympics or any other. Hell you probably can’t even swim, but are like all these other idiots who think because he as one bad race that all of a sudden he can’t win anything. He’ll win the 100/200fly and could very win the 200IM and should pick up Gold in the 4×100 Medley and 4×200 Fr relays. So at the end of the meet 4-5 Golds and 1 Silver is a career haul for any other athlete but an OK performance for Phelps.

Nobody has mentioned that swimming from lane 8 sucks, that’s mentally defeating before you even get on the blocks.

I’m pretty sure Cullen Jones qualified from an outside Lane for the Olympics this year!….

He didn’t say it couldn’t be done but it’s not preferred in most situations. For Phelps to go faster in that 400IM he needs Lochte next to him to feef off of.

I await tonight’s relay before passing any judgment on MP. The stress of accommodating sponsors before the Games and proper training is difficult. In retrospect MP should have had 1 4-hour media day in London and then gone into a cocoon. Tell Costas & Company to interview GBR coach about moving to Tuscaloosa

Do we have to wait until Rio to replace the TV channels?

let’s not be too dramatic, he shouldn’t have swam this one, but he will do fine on his fly races.

…yeah, it’s looking like everyone should’ve let MP do what he wanted to do. Remember 2009 and the hype about MP’s new freestyle. Straight-arm free, sure, not a big reveal, and he hardly used it, but MP wanted to work on his speed, not built more base. There’s a lot to be said for developing front-end speed when you’ve got years of training for the 4-IM under your belt.

He’s still by far one of the best ever, but I still hope he bounces back and crushes it, not for his sake but for team USA, because he’s out there representing the red white and blue and I hope his comments about not being fully rested for US nationals come and bite him in the foot.

What’s with all this “one of the best ever” stuff? Who’s even close? Lochte is great now, but hasn’t been at that level for the past 12 years and won’t be for the next 8. Nobody is close to Phelps so enough with one of the greatest and just admit he is the reason swimming is what it is today. None of this would be happening without Phelps. This site wouldn’t exist, Lochte wouldn’t be as good as he is and swimming would pale in comparision to what it is today.

I does not like Bleacher Report’s autoplay videos. Scared me ever so early in the morning.

And it even starts on a new video immediately after Mel’s!! Gross. (And after leaving this here comment, it’ll totally start again.)

But this video did get me thinking – how do you pronounce “Cavic”? I’ve always heard Cav-ich and it sounded like Cav-ick Mel said here. The K one seems more right to me.

Mel pronounced it pretty well. Milorad is Čavić, not Cavic, but it’s hard to translate that into English alphabet. It’s more like Chavich (like in CHile or Roman AbramoviCH). It’s not ideal but it’s as close as a native English speaker can pronounce.

Buy the way, +1 for Bleacher comment.

Phelps was never a quitter not a coward, I guess you should know that much if you follow swimming. In Athens, he lost 200 IM and his quest for 8 golds was over but he bounced back and won 6 golds. In Rome, Biedermann beat him and his world record and he came back to win butterflies in a fantastic manner.
One lost battle is insignificant if he wins war in the end, as Sun Tzu said. 🙂

Wow, too bad we have no ‘edit’ here. He lost 200 free in Athens, of course.

I thought it was a bad idea from the start to sacrifice 200 free for 400 IM and I said that after Trials. Anyway, Bob was very confident in his interviews, even Troy said MP’s improved greatly and he’ll ‘be there’, so, not sure what happened last night. It’s very unusual for Phelps to be slower than at Trials – I hope he’s not sick or something.
It’s not a disaster, let’s wait till the end of the meet to make our final verdict.

I really think the 400 IM is going to affect Phelps psychologically, in the sense where he will begin to question whether or not he prepared enough for the Olympics, without a question Lochte has put in 100%, Phelps not so much, and in the swimming community it’s understood why take the risk of not putting your best effort in prep work, why not give it your all? I think Phelps has gotten too comfortable with his position as the best swimmer in the world lately and figured he could take easy every now and then. He’s accomplished so much but if he knew he was going to retire why not train to make it your best….i.e. He’s been a… Read more »
