Lochte, USA Swimmers Didn’t Report Robbery to Rio Police

Local police have been investigating an armed robbery of four Team USA Olympic swimmers that took place in Rio on Sunday morning. However, according to the Rio police, no police report was filed by Ryan Lochte, Gunnar Bentz, Jack CongerJimmy Feigen, or any Olympic officials after the incident took place.

The Rio police launched an investigation immediately after learning of the robbery, but didn’t find out about it until news of the crime had circulated through the media. According to a police official, it was expected that the victims would immediately notfiy the Rio police, especially given their high-profile status.

United States Olympic Committee spokesperson Patrick Sandusky gave the following statement about the incident:

“According to four members of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team (Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger, Jimmy Feigen and Ryan Lochte), they left France House early Sunday morning in a taxi headed for the Olympic Village. Their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes’ money and other personal belongings. All four athletes are safe and cooperating with authorities.”

When the story first broke, the IOC denied that the robbery had taken place at all, stating they had spoken with both Lochte and the USOC to determine that reports of the incident were “absolutely not true.” Lochte’s coach, Dave Marsh, who came to Rio as the Head Coach for the USA women’s team, also initially denied that the incident took place.

Despite the denials by the USOC and IOC, Lochte confirmed to NBC reporter Billy Bush on Sunday morning that the robbery did, in fact, take place.

I also feel badly for the 3 amigos who tagged along with Commandant Klink (Lochte). They were led down the path of derision by an expert vagabond. Well done Ryan you are the class of classlessness again.

There’s no such thing as selective robbery in streets of Rio. First case in history where thieves left the mobile phones with the victims. In a pick pocket situation of course, but in a gun robbery… no way. They are still being treated as victims, but the evidences suggests they are lying. By the end of the week the images from city cameras will be revealed, and maybe your hero will be a liar. Personally, I believe he was robbed, he’s not coming with that from nowhere, but the robbery happened in a place that, maybe, his wife must not know.

Perhaps the robbery took place at a “Spa” that happened to be open late that one night only. In the end, they were unhappy.

Unfortunate if this screws up Lochte’s pro career (i.e. $$). News at 11.

Something stinks and it’s not the rotten dead fish on the open water course. The video of them re-entering the Olympic village shows they still have their iPhones and watches on. All very valuable. Seems like the robbery might not be the whole truth and a cover story for something else…..

Looks like IOC, USOC and Marsh denied it initially because they weren’t told about it, if the above Chicago Tribune article is true.

Does anyone have any links to a quote by Dave Marsh apologizing for denying that the incident actually happened?

Isn’t that latest that Lochte and crew didn’t report it because they were afraid to get in trouble? If that’s the case maybe Marsh didn’t know.

It sounds like they hadn’t planned on ever reporting it and just chalking it up to a lesson learned but unfortunately Ryan’s Mom wasn’t on the same page. My guess is she was staying at a hotel where media also were staying and spilled the story without realizing the consequences.
Wouldnt be surprised if USOC and swimming coaches suggested they head home and hope the story goes away as other headlines take over.
