Long Island Express Sprinter Michael Jiang Commits to Binghamton

TOP: Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Michael Jiang of Syosset Senior High School and Long Island Express of East Moriches, New York has announced his verbal commitment to swim for the Binghamton University Bearcats in the fall of 2019. Excelling mostly in sprint freestyle and sprint backstroke, Jiang has potential scoring times in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles and 100 yard backstroke, highlighted by career-best times in the 50 free and 100 back that would rank him 6th and 2nd (behind only UMBC senior Alexander Gliese) respectively within the American East Conference for the 2018-2019 season.

“I’m very proud to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming career at Binghamton University next year! This school has the perfect balance of outstanding athletics and academics that I was searching for and the coaches and teammates that I met on the trip really helped me solidify my decision. I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for all of their support.”

At the 2018 Northeast NSSC MIT Invite in December Jiang took 2nd place in the 100-yard backstroke (51.15) and 3rd in the 50-yard freestyle (21.02). Over the past summer at the Metropolitan Swimming Long Course Junior Olympics, he won the 100 LCM backstroke (1:01.29) while finishing 2nd in the 50 freestyle (24.62) and 4th in the 100 freestyle (55.71).

Best Times in Yards:

  • 50 free – 21.02
  • 100 free – 48.15
  • 100 back – 49.77
  • 200 back – 2:02.62

Jiang will be going a Binghamton team that is fresh off of a runner up finish at the 2019 America East Conference Championships. While his career-best 100 yard backstroke time would tab him as the team’s number 1 swimmer in that event, his 50 yard freestyle time would land him 3rd fastest on the team and his 100 yard freestyle time 5th. He will be joining Zachary Ciriaco, Brandon Berger, Jackson Homan, Ryan Maierle, Matthew Palguta, Justin Meyn, and Ryan Cohn as members of the Bearcats’ Class of 2023. He will be a welcomed addition to a very distance heavy class, with the only other pure sprinter being Meyn.
