Longhorn Invite Day 3 Prelims: Angel Martinez Swims MEX 200 IM National Record

2021 LONGHORN ELITE INVITE

The final preliminaries session of the 2021 Longhorn Elite Invite is now in the books, with just one more finals session to go at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Among the AM swims were the women’s and men’s 200 fly, 100 breast, 100 back, and 200 IM.

Leading the women’s 200 fly was Katie Drabot, touching in at 2:10.02, just 0.56s ahead of 18-year-old Lillie Nordmann (2:10.58). Filing in under the Wave II cut were Olivia Bray (2:11.44) and Taylor Pike (2:11.79), along with Singapore’s Jing Quah (2:12.12). Drabot is currently ranked No. 6 in the US this season at 2:09.24 from PSS Mission Viejo. On the men’s side, Gunnar Bentz put up a 1:58.10 morning effort, 0.42s ahead of Mexico’s Hector Ruvalcaba Cruz (1:58.52). Freestyler Townley Haas placed seventh in the men’s 200 fly prelims at 2:02.03, just off the Wave I cut of 2:01.19.

Allie Raab now ranks No. 10 in the US this season with her 100 breast morning effort of 1:08.11, just 0.05s ahead of yesterday’s 200 breast champ Anna Elendt (1:08.16). In the men’s 100 breast, Daniel Roy now ranks No. 11 in the nation at 1:01.13, seven-tenths ahead of Will Licon‘s 1:01.83 prelims swim.

Hitting a season best to remain No. 9 on the US women’s 200 back season rankings was Isabelle Stadden, stopping the clock at 1:00.17. Hitting a Wave II cut in the event to land lane five next to Stadden was Izzy Ivey, punching the wall at 1:01.26. Leo McAlister leads the men’s 100 back prelims seeds at 55.09, ahead of Shaine Casas (55.15) by 0.06s, Austin Katz (55.39), and Bryce Bohman (55.42).

The fastest American in the women’s 200 IM this season, Madisyn Cox, leads the event’s prelims here in Austin at 2:10.54, exactly 0.54s off her US No. 1 time of 2:10.00 from PSS Mission Viejo. Hitting Wave II cuts behind Cox were Evie Pfeifer (2:13.14) and Raab (2:13.42), separated by 0.28s.

On the men’s side, Carson Foster put up a humble 1:59.23 season best to rank 4th in the nation before tonight’s finals, set to begin at 5:30pm CST. Mexican Angel Martinez of Aggie Swim Club hit 2:00.18 to break his own national record of 2:00.58, which was set at PSS Indy last weekend. At the 2021 UANA Tokyo Olympic Qualifer at the beginning of May, Martinez had hit his then-PR of 2:01.46. Tonight, Martinez will be gunning for the automatic FINA Olympic qualification of 1:59.67, which Foster hit this AM. Jake Foster (2:00.89) and Licon (2:01.49) will also swim tonight’s final.

I think cox just put her name in the 4×200 not as a potential relay swimmer to a keep contributor ( Dirado went 4:31 and 2:08.79 in rio before going 1:56.31 on the relay) if she breaks the American record in the 400 iM I think the coaches will put her on the relay final (she can split potentially 155 mid)

Madison Cox 2:08.51 wow 2nd fastest American in textile! She had a amazing backhalf! Can she go mid/low 2:07? Can’t wait to see her put up a fast 400 IM at trials

Is that correct?

Cox’s previous personal best time was 2:09.03 in the women’s 200 IM.

Drabot has a very interesting new tactic…she swims the first 150 hard and then barely finishes the last 50 of her 200 fly. She has done this in her last two swims(Irvine + Texas)
what could be her reason for holding back?
Do the women from Stanford think that they will “surprise” everybody at Trials?

this means she is untapered. the last 50 will come after the taper.

Then how does Flickinger and Smith come back strong that last 50? I’m sure they’re not rested at these recent meets.

Rest is pretty specific to the individual. Take Townley and Dressel as examples.

Not quite the women’s WR, and Phelps did a 1:59 at 14, but yeah, go Haas.
