The state of Queensland has been the home of some of Australia’s top swimmers such as; Libby Trickett, Cate Campbell, Leisel Jones, Stephanie Rice, Alicia Coutts, Grant Hackett and Kieran Perkins, and on Saturday Greg Lalor, one of the men who was instrumental in developing swimming in the state of Queensland died at the age of 95.
Lalor was the chairman of Queensland Swimming for 26 years, taking on the role in 1973 and stepping down in 1999.
“Greg was a tireless worker for the sport of swimming. He never received one cent of remuneration for the time he spent as the Chief Administrator of the Sport and worked 16 hours, or more, most days often including Saturdays and Sundays,” said Queensland Swimming President John Keppie.
“In his role as Chairman of The Queensland Swimming Association he initiated the path that has made Queensland the power house of the sport of swimming in Australia.”
“He had a heart of gold for the athletes and the respect of most of those involved in the sport and he exerted a powerful and lasting influence over many of us who worked with him. Without doubt his foresight and determination set the sport of swimming in Australia on course to become and remain a respected world leader.”
The funeral will be held at 11.00 am on Thursday, 31 October, at Our Lady and St Dympna Church – 479 Robinson Rd, Aspley.
Greg Lalor was an amazing man. I was lucky enough to coach in Queensland while he was chairman. Professional, generous, proud Queenslander and great Australian. You will be missed.
