Scholastic All-American Marie Landreneau has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Alabama for the fall of 2024. Landreneau currently attends Saint Thomas More High School, and trains year-round with City of Lafayette Aquatics out of Lafayette, Louisiana.
“I am so excited and honored to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Alabama to continue my athletic and academic career. Thank you to my family for supporting me every step of the way. Thank you to Coach Cam and Coach Colleen for helping me excel on the pool and in the relationships around me. A special thank you to all my teammates and COLA family who have helped me become the person I am today. Thank you to Coach Margo and Coach James and the entire Alabama coaching staff for believing in me. Then, finally, thank you to all the St. Thomas More Catholic High School staff who have helped me accomplish my goals in the classroom. ROLL TIDE!”
Landreneau was named the 2022 Louisiana Swimming Swimmer of the year, and is a three-time Louisiana Swimming State Record holder. She holds records in both the 200m freestyle and 200y freestyle, as well as in the 200y breaststroke. Her mid-distance freestyle events have been quickly improving recently. She dropped a total of four seconds this past season in her 200m free and seven seconds in the 400m free.
Top SCY Times
- 100 free – 50.55
- 200 free – 1:47.50
- 500 free – 4:50.71
- 200 breast – 2:17.49
- 200 IM – 2:03.14
- 400 IM – 4:23.36
Landreneau recently competed at the 2022 NCSA Summer Swimming Championship where she clocked best times in 50m free (27.78), 100m free (57.34), 200m free (2:02.25), 400m free (4:20.47), and 200m IM (2:20.79). Her highest finish was the 200m free, where she placed 4th overall. Prior to NCSAs at the Louisiana Senior State meet, she also set personal bests in the 100m breaststroke (1:13.21), 200m breaststroke (2:42.84), and 400 IM (5:05.01). At this meet she took first in five out of the six events she competed in.
At the 2021 Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) Division II Championship, Landreneau won both the 100 breast (1:04.25) and 200 IM (2:04.10). The 200 IM was a new LHSAA Division II state record. She also led off St. Thomas More’s winning 400 freestyle relay with a 51.88. Her performance earned her the 2021 LHSAA Division II Swimmer of the Meet award.
Landreneau is another case of a top Louisiana recruit opting for an SEC rival over staying in-state for LSU. In the class of 2021, Sarah Holt, who was a four-year state champion in Louisiana opted for Texas A&M, while Jillian Barczyc, who was awarded the 2018 LHSAA Swimmer of the Meet, chose Georgia in 2019.
The Alabama women finished 3rd at the 2022 SEC Championship and 4th at the 2022 Division I NCAA Championship. Landreneau is outside of what it historically takes to qualify for NCAAs, but she should be a scorer at the conference level. Her best chance at scoring would most likely be the 200 free, where it took a 1:47.50 to advance to the C-final, which is exactly what Landreneau’s personal best is. With about a year and a half left to continue to improve, she could also be a contender to score in the 500, where it took a 4:47.94.
The 200 free was a relatively weak event for Alabama at SECs and NCAAs last year. Morgan Scott was the only finalist in the event at conference, going 1:44.65 to pick up 4th place. Their 5th place 800 free relay was Mela Delmenico (1:45.77), Cora Dupre (1:44.07), Kalia Anoniou (1:47.08), and Gracie Felner (1:46.14). Delmenico will be the only one of that group who is still on campus when Landreneau arrives, meaning Landreneau could very much be a piece of their 800 free relay in the future.
Landreneau’s best 200 free time is already faster than anyone in the two classes above her. In their current freshmen class, Lockett Bowley has a best 200 free time of 1:48.09 and has already broken 1:50.00 this season. Next fall, they will bring in a handful of sub-1:50 200 freestylers with Jada Scott (1:49.23), Ella Jones (1:48.53), and Laurel Blase (1:49.79).
Landreneau joins backstroker Lexi Stephens, breastroker Audrey Cohen, and IMer Teia Salvino. Although it’s not her best event, Salvino comes in with a best time of 1:49.06 in the 200 free.
