Louisville Picks Up Class of 2022 Verbal from Alena Kraus

Florida sprinter Alena Kraus has verbally committed to the University of Louisville. A rising senior at Gainesville, Kraus will be in Louisville’s class of 2022. She’s the first public commitment to the Cardinals for the 2018-19 season.

At the 2017 Florida 3A State Championships, Kraus won four state titles. She won both the 100 and 200 freestyle events, then anchored 23.18 and 49.92 on Gainesville’s title-winning 200 and 400 free relays, respectively.

Kraus will have a year of overlap with current Cardinal star Mallory Comerford, who is also primarily a sprint freestyler with strong butterfly abilities. Not that this means anything, necessarily, but Kraus’s times are nearly identical to Comerford’s before she got to Louisville– Comerford was 23.2/50.1/1:47.7 out of high school, as well as 54.7 in the 100 fly.

While head coach Arthur Albiero has done a phenomenal job developing decent swimmers like Comerford and Kelsi Worrell into stars, Kraus is already fast enough to pick up some points at ACCs. With her best times, she would’ve been in the 200 free B final, 100 fly C final, 200 fly C final and 500 free C final at 2017 ACCs.
