The Louisville Cardinal men and women continued to dominate the Purdue Invite this evening, as the women went undefeated in the pool and the men only lost one relay and one individual event.
Purdue’s Trent Pellini was the sole man to defeat the Cardinals in an individual event, as the breaststroke specialist threw down a time of 51.81, about a half a second ahead of Louisville’s ace Evgenii Somov (52.34). Both those times are faster than anyone had been yet this season coming into this round of invites, and Pellini appears to be the first man to get under the 52-second barrier this fall. That’s his 2nd-fastest time ever, behind only his 51.76 from last season’s Big Ten Championships.
Louisville’s other non-diving loss came in the 200 medley relay. Half of the team in the A-final DQ’d, including Louisville’s ‘A’ team, which appeared to touch first. Pitt’s team officially won in 1:26.51, thanks to Blaise Vera‘s 18.76 anchor leg, but Louisville’s ‘B’ relay was actually faster with a 1:26.12.
Other men’s results:
- Daniel Sos got the individual action going with a 3:45.17 win in the 400 IM. That’s about two seconds than his time at this point last year, and the Cardinals will be looking for him to pick up some IM points again come championship season.
- Bartosz Piszczorowicz was the only man under 1:35 in the 200 prelims. He couldn’t quite match that time tonight, but still won in 1:35.17, leading a Cardinal sweep of the top four spots.
- Nick Albiero won the 100 fly in 46.72, and later took 2nd in the 100 back (46.71) behind teammate Mitchell Whyte (46.30).
- Grand Canyon’s Toscan Hufnagel won the 3m with a score of 391.95.
- Louisville men wrapped up the day with a 6:25.38 win in the 800 free relay. Colton Paulson, who finished 2nd in the individual 200 free, had the fastest split in the field with a 1:34.99.
On the women’s side, Louisville won every single swimming event (although FIU’s Rachel Foord won the 1m diving event). Here’s a quick rundown of the Cardinal winners:
- Louisville women started the night with a 1:37.44 win in the 200 medley relay. The Cardinals had the fastest splits on three of the four legs, with the exception being Jing En Phee‘s 27.19 breast split for Purdue, who came in 2nd with a 1:39.23.
- Louisville swept the top four spots in the 400 IM, led by Maria Sumida‘s 4:12.88.
- Nastja Govejsek won the 100 fly 52.99 as Louisville swept the top three places. Grace Oglesby swam on the medley relay, splitting 23.11, but didn’t swim any individual events tonight despite having the fastest 100 fly time of the morning with a 51.84.
- Mariia Astashkina took the 100 breast in 1:00.26, as Louisville again swept the top three.
- Ashlyn Schoof (53.45) and Lainey Visscher (53.64) went 1-2 in the 100 back.
- They closed off the evening with a 7:07.08 win in the 800 free relay, led by Openysheva’s 1:45.87 anchor. Purdue took 2nd in 7:14.83.
