Louisville’s Joao de Lucca Added to Brazilian Olympic Roster

The Brazilian swimming federation, the CBDA, has announced that after today’s big reveal of the Olympic relay invites, that they would add Louisville star Joao de Lucca to their Olympic lineup as a relay-only swimmer.

De Lucca, though not likely to swim the 400 medley, was the benefactor of the rule that, by a second relay invite, gives the Brazilians an extra relay-only swimmer. He instead will be the 6th member of the 400 free relay that has medal hopes in London.

De Lucca broke out last season with Louisville at the collegiate level, where he placed 3rd in the 200 free and 7th in the 100. His big long course meet came at the Maria Lenk Trophy, where he posted a 49.27 in the 100 free to earn this spot on the team.

He will join an impressive cast of characters on that relay, including Cesar Cielo, Nicolas Oliveira, Bruno Fratus, Marcelo Chierighini, and Nicholas Santos.
