LSU All-American swimmer Peyton Curry has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after two seasons with the Tigers.
Curry, the younger sister of two-time NCAA Champion for LSU and Olympic gold medalist for the US Brooks, committed under former head coach Dave Geyer, though her first two years of college swimming have coincided with the start of the Rick Bishop era in Baton Rouge.
Payton Curry was part of the breakthrough performance in the 2022-2023 for the Tigers. She was selected to the Tigers’ NCAA Championship roster to swim a leg of their 200 free relay that placed 5th overall. Her 22.21 split on the third leg was that group’s second-fastest behind only Maggie MacNeil, the 5th year whose 20.37 was the fastest of the field and #3 split all-time.
She also swam the third leg of LSU’s SEC Championship-winning 200 free relay, splitting 22.23 there. That was the team’s first SEC title in a relay since 1986.
LSU qualified their first women’s relays for the NCAA Championships since 2016 last season, They in fact qualified all 5 relays, though they only wound up swimming the 200 and 400 free relays.
Time Progressions:
HS Best | Freshman Year |
Sophomore Year
|
|
50 free | 23.07 | 22.77 | 22.99 |
100 free | 50.69 | 50.32 | 49.87 |
200 free | 1:48.75 | 1:50.81 | 1:49.18 |
Peyton Curry is a native of Dunwoody, Georgia, and attended Rivers Academy for high school. Brooks Curry was a senior this season, meaning he has a potential 5th year of eligibility to use at LSU (or elsewhere) because of the COVID-19-impacted 2020-2021 college season.
If Peyton Curry does wind up leaving the program, that would mean at least half of that 5th place 200 free relay would be leaving: MacNeil is out of eligibility. Katarina Milutinovich is a senior, but has her COVID year left to uses if she chooses.
Entering the transfer portal does not require a student-athlete to transfer, rather it gives coaches from other interested schools the ability to contact them to discuss transfers.
Under new NCAA rules, NCAA D1 swimmers & divers have 60 days after NCAA Championship invites are announced to enter the Transfer Portal.
