Many conferences announced their Swimmer of the Week award for meets taking place from January 18th-24th. The below is a complete list of Division 1 conferences as of publishing time, and will be updated as more become available. If you know of one that we missed, please post it in the comments. Not every conference gives an award every week. Conferences are listed in alphabetical order.
ACC- The ACC named senior John Azar Men’s Swimmer of the Week. This was Virginia’s fourth men’s SOTW honor this season. Azar swept 4 events in a victory over Duke, including a B-cut in the 200 freestyle (1:37.86).
Virginia swept the ACC awards with Mei Christensen winning the women’s SOTW. This was her team’s fourth award of the season, and her second in 3 weeks. In 5 events against no. 15 North Carolina, Christensen had 5 wins, 4 B-cuts, and an A-cut. Her 52.93 in the 100 backstroke made her only the ACC’s third automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championships.
Big 12- Missouri swept the Big 12 awards for just the third time in school history. Sophmore Jan Konarzewski won the men’s award, won both the 100 and 200 backstrokes against no. 8 Minnesota. Konarzewski is the Minnesota school record holder in both events.
Colleen Gordon won the Big 12 women’s SOTW award after an impressive 2-week span of swims. Gordon set personal bests in the 1000 free (9:54.00), 200 fly (2:00.99), and 100 fly (55.07) against Arkansas, which is an impressive feat for this part of the season. Each of these swims also ranked in the top 5 in school History. In another meet, Gordon also broke the Iowa State pool record in the 200 free (1:49.61).
Big Ten-The Big Ten announced on Tuesday that its conference swimmer of the week was Indiana sophomore Margaux Farrel. Farrel won 2 events in last week’s meet against rival Purdue, including an NCAA B-cut of 1:48.14 in the 200 freestyle.
Coastal Collegiate Swim Association (CCSA)– Gardner-Webb (North Carolina) junior Stephen Caudill won Male SOTW honors after leading the Bulldogs to it’s first ever dual meet win over conference rival, and two-time defending CCSA Champion, College of Charleston. Caudill had 4 wins in the meet.
Colonial Athletic Association-Junior April Barrientos was named the CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week. Barrientos won both backstroke meets in a quad-meet last week against George Mason, Army, and American. She clocked a time of 56.59 in the 100 backstroke, an event that she is a 2-time champion of at the CAA Conference Championship meet.
Old Dominion sophmore Arni Arnason and Drexel’s Adrian Sabovici shared Men’s Co-Swimmer of the Week honors. Arnason, the reigning conference Swimmer of the Year, won both breaststroke events at the quad-meet, and also took home a title in the 50 free. Sabovici broke a 24-year old Drexel pool record in his last home meet in the 1650 free. His time of 15:58.01, along with a win in the 500 free, led the Dragons to a big win over Providence.
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference-Brad Reeser, a senior at Loyola-Maryland was named the MAAC Male Swimmer of the Week. He won 3 individual events for the Greyhounds over Towson, and anchored the 200-yard medley relay to a victory as well. Reeser won the 50-yard freestyle (21.47), 100-yard freestyle (47.19) and 200-yard freestyle (1:43.16). This is his second award this season, and Loyola’s fifth.
Mid-American Conference– Eastern Michigan junior Justin Griggs won his first Mid-American Conference SOTW award. Griggs won four races to lead Easter Michigan to its 51st and 52nd straight dual meet wins last week. Among other great swims, Griggs’ 20.94 in the 50 freestyle was the second-fastest in the conference this season.
Mountain West Conference– Wyoming senior Tommy Gregory was named the MWC Swimmer of the Week. Gregory earned seven victories in two dual meets over the weekend in wins over BYU and Utah. Gregory won the 50 freestyle, the 100 freestyle twice, the 200 freestyle, and led his team to two victories in the 400 medley and one in the 200 freestyle relay.
BYU senior Natasha Menezes won 5 first places in wins over Air Force and Wyoming. Her most notable achievement of the weekend was breaking the Corbett pool record in the 200 free in 1:52.56.
Northeast Conference– Freshman Molly Smith, of Bryant University in Rhode Island, has been named the Northeast Conference Swimmer of the week. This is her second award this season, and Bryant’s third. In two meets last week, Smith won 5 events, including setting the school record in the 200 freestyle (1:59.48). More impressively, Smith showed her diversity after winning 5 unique events in the two meets: the 200 free, 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 fly, and 200 I.M.
Patriot League- Mac Anthony, a sophomore at the Naval Academy, won 2 individual events against Yale to win this week’s Patriot League SOTW award. Anthony has now won 15 of his 17 individual races in dual meets this season.
Navy Senior Tara Chapmon won her fifth SOTW award of the season, and 15th of her career. That means that Chapmon and teammate Thuy-Mi Dinh have won every Swimmer of the Week award this season in weeks where Navy had a meet. The midshipman trailed Yale 143-140 headed into the last event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay. Chapmon, the anchor, entered the water 1.07 seconds behind, but made up the distance and then some to give Navy a dramatic victory in the meet.
SEC-Junior Adam Brown of Auburn was named the SEC Male Swimmer of the Week. Brown won the 50 and 100 freestyles against No. 6 Florida last week, including recording the 2nd best time in the nation, and a personal best, in the 100 free (43.23). Brown also won the 50 free in a career best (19.79).
Auburn Freshman Stuart Ferguson was named the SEC Male Freshman of the Week, after recording two career best swims. Against Florida, Ferguson won his first collegiate race and recorded his first B-cut in the 100 breast in 55.15. He also had a career best in the 200 breast (2:02.06)
LSU swimmer Jane Trepp, a versatile swimmer from Estonia, picked up SEC Women’s SOTW honors in a loss to no. 6 Texas A&M. Trepp began by breaking a six-year old pool record in the 50 free (22.91) by leading off the 200 free relay. She then gave A&M’s Alia Atkinson, the fastest 100 breaststroker in the nation, her first loss of the season by swimming a speedy 1:02.01, an NCAA B-cut. Trepp also won the 100 butterfly, in another B-cut, with a time of 53.99.
LSU diver Rebecca St. Germain won SEC Freshman Female of the Week after winning both springboard events.
Summit League– JulieAnne Stears, a freshman at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, won Women’s SOTW honors by scoring the conference’s fastest time this season in the 1000 free. Her time was over 8 seconds faster than the 2nd fastest time this season, and was the third fastest time in school history.
Centenary (Louisiana) sophomore Devin Ross won the Summit League’s Male Swimmer of the Week award for the second time this season after winning four events in a dual against Trinity University last week. Ross holds the top two times in the 50 freestyle in the league this season.
WAC– Sophmore Amber Boucher earned her second straight SOTW award, and Boise St.’s fifth of the season. Against rival Idaho, Boucher broke the school record in the 100 fly (55.59) and recorded the fastest 50 freestyle in the WAC this season (23.38).
