Luka Mijatovic Breaks His Own 15-16 NAG Record in the 400 Freestyle

2025 TYR Pro Swim Series — Westmont

Luka Mijatovic finished 4th in the men’s 400 freestyle tonight, swimming 3:48.95 to break his own 15-16 National Age Group Record in the 400m freestyle by a little under three tenths of a second.

  • World Junior Record: 3:44.31 – Petar Mitsin, BUL (2023)

  • U.S. Open Record: 3:43.53 – Larsen Jensen, USA (2008)

Final:

  7. Stephan de Freitas Steverink (FRJ), 3:52.64
  8. Ilia Sibirtsev (UZB), 3:52.80

Mijatovic is only 15-years-old and he has already broken the 15-16 NAG record twice, first setting it back in August when he went 3:49.24 at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships. He also holds the 13-14 NAG record in the event.

His swim tonight marks his first time under 3:49, coming in at 3:48.95. While he is still two years away from even being eligible to break the record, he is now less than three seconds away from the 17-18 record of 3:46.08 set by Larsen Jensen back in 2004.

When he broke the record back in August, he became the only 15-16 year-old swimmer to go under 3:50 in the event coming in ahead of Larsen Jensen‘s 22 year old record of 3:50.68. He only further expanded the gap between him and the next closest swimmer ever with his swim tonight.

Very, very impressive. What was Thorpe at 15? (Just curious; not trying to trivialize Luka’s swim)

How rude, you’re comparing a swimmer to Thorpe, what an insult

Under 3:50 before you can drive yourself to practice is crazy.

I remember Larsen’s first Mile swim. He went a 17:30, and later that summer he went a 16:30. By the next summer we went to Western Zones and he went like 8:05 in the 800. The Progression was crazy.
