Luke Greenbank Lowers 200 Backstroke Jr World Record

Great Britain’s Luke Greenback powered through the men’s 200 backstroke today to win the European Games Gold medal in the event, earning his second individual gold medal of the Games. His final time of 1:56.89 lowered Guangyuan Li‘s previous Jr World Record mark of 1:56.94 from the 2014 Youth Olympics last summer.

Take a look at SwimSwam’s Jr World Record board here.

Take a look at the comparative splits:

  • Guangyuan Li – 1:56.94
    • 27.72
    • 57.76 (30.04)
    • 1:27.42 (29.66)
    • 1:56.94 (29.52)
  • Luke Greenback – 1:56.98
    • 27.10
    • 56.30 (29.20)
    • 1:26.27 (29.97)
    • 1:56.98 (30.62)

The other controversial swim this morning was Danii Pakhomov‘s 100 butterfly. Although his time was faster that FINA’s junior world record mark on paper, it isn’t the true junior world record. Li Zhuhao posted a time of 51.91 at the 2014 Asian Games last year, which was faster than the Jr World Record at the time and Pakhomov’s time today.

Because the Jr World Records are so new, many people are not aware that they need to submit an application after posting a faster time. Unless we specifically here otherwise from FINA, we are still going to count the 51.91 as the Jr World Record.
