Olympic and NCAA champion Lydia Jacoby took her first LCM win in a while, touching first in the 100 breast at the Westmont pro swim. Jacoby discusses riding the momentum from NCAAs and switching her focus to long course, noting that she’s never trained LCM before in her career.
Well …. that’s not an issue at the University of Texas.

How the hell does she beat people with vastly superior facilities and coaching?
Bigger question is how do all these swimmers come out of club programs with VASTLY inferior resources and facilities, and then go to college programs with superior resources and get SLOWER. Lydia is one of the lucky ones.

Must be one of the few Olympic gold medalists who have up till recently never trained LC can’t think of anyone else that has been in this particular situation.
Ledecky trained only SCY up to her first gold medal in 2012.

I believe Daniel Diehl also doesn’t have a LCM pool to train in. Amazing how Lydia and Daniel are still so fast!
I think people would be surprised at how many US swimmers do not have regular access to a 50m pool. People in the south and CA take them for granted, but in colder climes they can be very few and far between, with many teams limited to outdoor season only access, and even then only a couple practices per week.
I grew having to drive 45min to a 55yard pool bc that was the closest thing we had…
All of our 50m tanks except 3 (we once had about 10 — circa 1975 — in South Louisiana) have been filled in in the last quarter century! So have many of our SCYs too. Sad! I go to the spots often, still saying requiems. It’s amazing any of them survived.
I’m from New York. My club team only had access to a 50-yard (yes yard) pool in the summer. Friends on another team used a 40-meter pool. Teams are forced to get very creative sometimes.
