Lynchburg, Va. — University of Lynchburg’s men’s and women’s swim teams opened the 2021-22 season Friday evening with an exhibition dual meet with the Liberty University women’s varsity and men’s club teams inside the Liberty Natatorium.
The Hornet men totaled three event victories on the evening, starting with senior Chris Jennings‘ victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.08) in just the fourth event of the evening. Junior Kevin Bennett set the pace in the 200 backstroke, finishing in 2:05.23 and posting a one-two finish with classmate Canaan Monteith (2:09.40).
Lynchburg’s third event victory of the evening came in the 100 individual medley, when freshman Miles Fitzgerald completed the distance in 57.82. The Hornets swept the top three positions in the race; junior Kellen Campbell took second (59.26), and junior Jason Weed came in third (59.52).
On the women’s side, the Hornets’ 200 medley relay set the tone as sophomore Lena Steckler, junior Claire Galloway, sophomore Delaney Kennedy, and freshman Savy Borroughs teamed up to touch in 1:52.16.
Sophomore Maddie Corbett followed the strong open with a solid season-opener in the 500 free (5:37.18), and Borroughs followed with a 25.09-second 50 free that bumped the rookie up to fourth on the program’s all-time top times list.
Lynchburg’s swim teams will take a respite for Fall Break before diving back into training ahead of the 2021 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Relays, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9 at Washington and Lee.
