Lynchburg YMCA Hires Parkland’s Ryan Woodruff as New Director

The YMCA of Central Virginia, Lynchburg, has hired Ryan Woodruff as their new Director of Competitive Swimming, grabbing Woodruff away from USA Swimming silver medal club the Parkland Aquatic Club.

The team’s current head coach, TJ Liston, says “The YMCA of Central Virginia, Lynchburg, is very excited to have someone of the caliper of Ryan to take over the program at this juncture.”

Woodruff has an impressive resume that includes stints as the head coach of the Gator Swim Club, as an assistant coach with the University of North Carolina, and as the head coach of the North Carolina Aquatic Club. Between his time at NCAC and Parkland, he worked as a financial advisor outside of the world of swimming.

In his first year at Parkland, Woodruff has led his swimmers to the Middle Atlantic LSC Senior Championships team title.

Woodruff also maintains a blog called swimmingwizard.blogspot.com, where he shares his team’s workouts. A quick scroll through those workouts indicate a pretty balanced approach to training, but leaning toward primarily sprint and broken workouts (though not so far as, say, USRPT).

Lynchburg is lucky to get such a talented coach. He will be missed at PAAC! Sprint coach yes, distance coach absolutely.

Yes, a man who developed the 2014 Summer Junior National champion in the 1,500 is a sprint coach. Don’t get me wrong, Ryan has had athletes be successful at all disciplines, but to say his workouts are sprint oriented (based on a select few from HIS blog) is just blasphemy.

Congratulations, Ryan!
