2021 SI 13O A LC Meet

Big names highlighted a club meet in Coronado, California last weekend including UCLA grad Linnea Mack, Germany’s Marius Kusch and Jacob Heidtmann, and 2016 US Olympian Jacob Pebley.
Mack, of Team Elite, blasted the only U.S. Olympic Trial Wave II cut on the women’s side of the meet in the 100 free with a time of 54.61. Her lifetime best time, 53.78, is only two weeks old and ranks her 22nd in the world this season. This was her only event of the meet.
On the men’s side, Kusch took down the 100 fly with a time of 52.91, coming within 1.6 seconds of his lifetime best time from March 2019. He then posted a 49.83 in the 100 free, about 1.13 seconds off his lifetime best, also from March 2019.
Kusch then swam a 24.18 in the 50 free, slightly more than one second off his best time from February 2020.
Heidtmann also had an extensive event lineup:
- 200 IM: 2:03.30
- 200 breast: 2:17.35
- 400 IM: 4:24.15
- 200 free: 1:52.59
In the 200 IM, he was about 4 seconds off his lifetime best from the German Olympic Trials in April, but in the 200 breast he came within 3.04 seconds of his best time, also from April. Heidtmann was farther off his lifetime bests in both the 400 IM, as he swam a 4:12.08 at the 2015 World Championships for 5th place, and the 200 free (he posted a 1:46.83 at the 2018 European Championships.)
Both Heidtmann and Kusch have earned spots on Germany’s Olympic roster for the Tokyo Olympics.
Pebley dropped season-best times in both the 100 back (56.26) and 100 free (51.82). While he was 3.3 seconds off his best 100 back time (from 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials) and 2.3 seconds off his best 100 free time (from 2017 Summer Nationals), these season-best times may be good signs for Pebley heading into the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials in a few weeks where he’ll contest his signature event: the 200 back.
Kusch, Heidtmann and Pebley are all currently training with Team Elite.
14-year-old Zane Johnson of South Bay Aquatics also made some waves, dropping a 2:07.68 in the 200 fly and taking nearly 10 seconds off his second-fastest swim logged in the USA Swimming database from 2019. Johnson took it out in 1:01.39, came home in 1:06.29 to earn a new Futures cut. This swim ranks #57 out of the all-time fastest 13-14 year-olds in the event.
He then swam the 100 fly, posting a time of 58.99 to demolish his previous best from 2019 by nearly 4 seconds.
Other Notable Swims:
- Spencer Daily, a rising senior at UC San Diego, swam a lifetime best 100 fly time of 53.66, taking one-tenth of a second off his previous best from the 2019 Summer Nationals.
- Daily also posted a 23.06 in the 50 free, coming within .13 of his lifetime best time from Feb 2020.
- Kristina Murphy, a rising senior at San Diego State, posted a 2:34.04 in the 200 breast. She came within 1.5 seconds of her lifetime best from the 2017 Summer Nationals
- Murphy then clocked a lifetime best 200 IM time of 2:19.89, shaving .06 off her previous best from August 2019
This season Linnea Mack improved unexpectedly for many her personal best by exactly 1 sec taking currently #4 spot among American sprinters. But that is the only 53 sec result of 6 races she made last two months. It is absolutely hard to predict which way she will go at trials. I won’t be surprised neither by 53 low nor by 54 flat.
