MacNeil Breaks Oleksiak’s Canadian Record in 50 Fly, Barratt Swims World #1

2021 FINA WORLD CUP – BERLIN

Maggie MacNeil swam her way to a new Canadian record in the women’s short course 50 butterfly by hitting a 25.13 at the 2021 FINA World Cup in Berlin. That time for MacNeil was enough to take out Penny Oleksiak‘s former national record in the event of 25.20 from back in 2018.

This 50 butterly by MacNeil constitutes her 3rd individual Canadian record, adding to her 55.59 mark in the long course 100 butterfly courtesy of her gold medal swim at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and her short course 50 backstroke mark of 25.84. That 50 back NR by MacNeil came from her finals swim on day 1 of the Berlin World Cup when she took out Kylie Masse’s mark of 25.97.

Maggie MacNeil is currently a senior at the University of Michigan, meaning that she’s not currently racing in the International Swimming League. Her impressive versatility in the sprint butterfly, backstroke, and freestyle bode well, however, for a potential future in the league.

MacNeil threatened the record during the prelims round when she swam a 25.41 and managed to crack the mark during finals, resulting in a third-place finish. Gold in the event went to Australia’s Holly Barratt who swam a 24.77, while countrymate Emma McKeon clocked a 25.10 for silver.

That’s a slight best time for both Barratt and McKeon in the event, improving upon their respective  24.80 25.24 PBs. Barratt’s swim allowed her to inch even closer to the 2009 Australian record in the event of 24.69 held by Marieke Guehrer from 2009.

Barratt’s swim makes her the 11th fastest woman in the history of the event, while McKeon is now tied with Hinkelien Schreuder for 18th and MacNeil sits in 19th place. In terms of 2021 rankings, the trio is now all within the top 5.

  3. Sarah Sjostrom – 24.98
