USA Swimming has posted an updated roster for the 2015 World University Games (Summer Universiade) that will take place in Gwangju, South Korea from July 3rd-14th, and two swimmers have been dropped.
Women’s sprint freestyler Maddy Schaefer and men’s backstroker Shane Ryan have both been removed from Team USA, and their races have been filled by other swimmers who were already on the team.
Schaefer withdrew from the Stanford swim team mid-season in 2015 without public explanation, but remained on the World University Games roster until today’s update.
Ryan, meanwhile, announced this week via his Facebook page that he was switching his sporting nationality to attempt to earn a spot on the Irish Olympic Team in 2016, which precludes him from competing for the United States at the World University Games.
Schaefer’s former Stanford teammate Felicia Lee will take her spot on the women’s 400 free relay, which adds to her existing spot in the individual 100 fly; while Clay Youngquist will swim the men’s 400 free relay to go with his individual invite in the 200 free (and presumably a spot on the 800 free relay as well).
Should they not be adding someone to the roster?? There is now an open spot. Maybe because it is too late and they needed to have the roster finalized? There has to be another eligible 100 free guy ranked shortly after Shane.
Any idea why Youngquist and not Ellis or Powers?
Youngquist beat Ellis and Powers by a good margin at Nationals… going a 49.6, being the next fastest behind Murray.
