Madeleine Gough Continues Distance Dominance at Barcelona Open Day 2

Madeleine Gough continued to impress during the second finals session of the meet in Barcelona, noteably taking down Mireia Belmonte again in a distance race. This time Gough was domiant in the 800 free, swimming a speedy 8:36.32 for the 2nd fastest time in the world this year, behind only the United States’ Ashley Twichell. Jimena Perez was 2nd in the race, touching well behind Gough in 8:48.76, while Belmonte was 3rd again with an 8:51.12.

There was a tighter race on the men’s side, with Miguel Duran taking victory over Albert Escrits by 1.43 seconds. The race was tight the whole way through, with the 1.43 second margin actually bing the largest gap between the 2 swimmers during the entire race. Duran had the early lead, but Escrits pulled slightly ahead in the middle of the race, before Duran pulled back ahead anf ultimately got to the wall first. Duran touched in 8:07.66 to Escrits’ 8:09.09.

Joan Lluis Pons pulled out a definitive win in the men’s 200 fly, swimming a 2:00.81 to win by 3.07 seconds. Pons was under 2:00 pace for the 1st 150 meters, touching the 150 in 1:29.11, but then splitting a 31.35 on the final 50. Jessica Vall took the women’s 50 breast, swimming a 31.53 to win by .66 seconds. Meanwhile, David Benitez won the men’s 50 breast with a 28.49, with Mario Navea coming in 2nd in 28.84.
