Maleigha Vietti Gives Vassar College Distance Group a Big Addition for 2022

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Currently, in the midst of her senior season at Blue Valley West High School in Overland Park, Kansas, Maleigha Vietti has announced her college decision, committing to swim at Vassar College next fall. Last season, Vietti was the captain of her high school team that won it’s first-ever Kansas 6A State Championships. She was also named to the Missouri Valley All-Academic Team and serves as a USA Swimming Learn to Swim Ambassador.

“Dreams become reality! I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to Vassar College. It’s not only a wonderful opportunity to swim for a great team and a fantastic coach, but I look forward to furthering my academics at such a prestigious institution. Thanks to all of my supporters who helped along the way, especially my family. Go Brewers! Ⓥ©”
Vietti served as a captain of the Blue Valley West girls when they finished in first at the Kansas Girls 6A State Championship meet in 2021. She claimed two medals at the meet, securing a second-place finish in the 500 free and helping her school claim the title in the medley relay.
Just last weekend, Vietti hit a trio of new lifetime best times while racing at the IFLY Midwest Challenge at the University of Iowa. Her top finish came in the 500 free, where she powered to an 8th place finish. While she was slightly slower during finals, she touched in 5:13.89 during prelims. She also added a 9th place finish in the 1650 free (18:12.95)  and 38th place finish in the 200 free (2:00.39). Both of those performances were lifetime bests.

Top SCY Times

  • 50 free – 25.60
  • 100 free – 57.32
  • 200 free – 2:00.39
  • 500 free — 5:13.89
  • 1000 free – 10:57.54
  • 1650 free – 18:12.95

In Vassar’s last full season of competition, the 2019-2020 school year, the team finished in fourth at the Liberty League Championships. The team’s strength came in the 200 events, with the team winning three out of the four 200’s of stroke. In the distance events, Angharad Healey led the team, grabbing silver in the 500 with a time of 5:11.18. Vietti would have scored individually in both the 500 and 1650 at the meet that year,

Vietti is a huge addition to the Vassar team in her primary events. So far this year, her best time in the 200 free would put her on the school’s 800 free relay. She also would lead the program in the 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyles. Her best time in the 1650 is a full minute and a half faster than the school’s fastest this season, Abigail Jenkins. Vietti could reasonably drop to within range of the school’s records early in her college career. She’s less than 45 seconds off of the school’s 1650 record and her 500 is just 8 seconds back. Those records were set in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
